Paranoia by

In case you haven't noticed, the U.S. Congress, that completely inept, dysfunctional branch of our government, has just recently taken steps to enact legislation that would allow the military, in certain situations, to detain U.S. citizens and hold them indefinitely, without being charged with any violation of the law, and with no trial by jury. And, it appears that President Obama fully intends to sign it. How's that for what will prove to be a fatal blow to the U.S. Constitution?

This legislation, Senate bill S.1867 was initiated by Republican Senator John McCain and Democrat Carl Levin. It easily passed the Senate with a vote of 86-13 and will shortly be sent to President Obama as part of The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. This bill is clearly another move by this government to further erode the constitutional rights of American citizens.

What would the Founding Fathers think of this form of treachery? Those patriots who designed the U.S. Constitution would be in a state of shock and disbelief to think that our government had regressed to this degree; that the government that they created would be the vehicle by which the Constitution was being circumvented. These pitiful, corrupted politicians in this tainted Congress should be forbidden from ever again reciting the pledge of allegiance or saluting the flag because of their nefarious actions against their own country and their fellow citizens.

For those of us who have read the classic novel, "1984", starring Big Brother, what is happening in America today is chilling. Each and every year we have seen this nation getting closer to becoming the modern-day version of the fictitious nation that is depicted in that prophetic novel. If you haven't read it you should because it says so much about the deteriorating legal and moral conditions in the nation in which we live. The specter of Big Brother looms large over America.

The increasing aggressiveness and unjustifiable police actions against the Occupy Movement's demonstrators in New York City and Oakland, as well as in other cities, is a precursor to what may become common in America going into the future. This government that has expended a huge portion of its wealth expanding its military empire and going after suspected terrorists all over the world has now decided that America will become the next battleground.

There is mounting evidence that those in high positions of our government are caught up in a state of paranoia brought on by the 9/11 disaster. P aranoia, by definition, is "an unfounded or exaggerated distrust of others, sometimes reaching delusional proportions." Paranoid individuals constantly suspect the motives of those around them, and believe that certain individuals, or people in general, are "out to get them." Another definition: "Exhibiting or characterized by extreme and irrational fear or distrust of others."

It seems that we have a government whose members think that some perceived enemy is lurking around every corner. It's as if they are constantly looking back to see who's following them. Whether it's a shoe bomber or an underwear bomber, these paranoid politicians are ready to panic at the slightest hint of a threat and are, as a result, more than ready and willing to take away more of the peoples' constitutional rights to tighten control over this society.

This is, without a doubt, the most craven, cowardly Congress in the history of this nation. The members of this branch of our government, with some exceptions, are a disgrace to America and its democracy. It has often been said that, after 9/11, America will never be the same. Well if this legislation is enacted into law that belief will be greatly reinforced as the land of the free will have become the land of the oppressed and suppressed.

If President Obama fails to veto this legislation and signs it into law then he will go down in history as a leader who was directly involved in the process of stripping away the constitutional rights of the people of America. He will be remembered as a president who, instead of protecting the rights of Americans, used his presidential powers to significantly reduce them. This will become his historical legacy.

We should remember that this president is a constitutional scholar that, of all people, should realize that when he allows these kinds of unconstitutional actions to take place, that he is violating his oath of office, i.e., "I, , do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

So, to take it a step further, let's say that Mr. Obama signs this anti-constitutional legislation. If that happens and the American people become fully aware of the implications of what he has done, then that may be more than his supporters will tolerate. He has disappointed and disillusioned so many Americans by his failure to stand up for them and to be receptive to their concerns that this might be the last straw; at that point, his chances for reelection would become very problematic. What he does on this issue will tell us all we need to know about his true character and intentions.

Each time our government infringes upon the people's rights under the Constitution through such measures as the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act, among other restrictive laws, we are told not to be concerned, for what we may consider to be a definite threat to our freedoms is not that at all but, rather, more security and protection for all Americans. That could be no further from the truth since, slowly but surely, these rights are evaporating before our eyes.

The recent introduction of drones into the American skies is a further ominous sign of what the future may hold. Most Americans have not been the least concerned about the use of these UAV's (unmanned aerial vehicles) while they have been used extensively in Iraq, Afghanistan and other nations, killing both terrorists as well as many innocent civilians. But now that this government has seen fit to use them for surveillance within America itself, a new chapter in the surveillance of the people of this nation has been opened.

Many of us remember that during the ill-fated presidency of G.W. Bush, when his administration was laying the groundwork for his war on terrorism, we were given this dire warning: "Be afraid, be very, very afraid." Such fear mongering continues to be used to scare people so that they will give up more and more of their constitutional rights in order to try to guarantee their safety and security. But, in the end, that becomes a losing proposition for all Americans.

This further infringement of citizens' constitutional rights is a clear indication that those who manage this nation's war against terrorism have decided to turn their sights on their fellow Americans. You may have heard the term "military-security complex" used to describe the huge consortium that is sucking the wealth out of our national treasury to fuel the machinery of war. In addition to controlling the wealth of the nation, these promoters of war also intend to control the rights of the American people.
