Overheard conversation:

Have you been watching the World Cup?

Every chance I get. I am rooting for Germany now.

I was relaxing at a mountain lake at the time I overheard this. Later I went to get gas for my car, I had been putting it off for days, to the point I had made several stops with the empty light on that day. On my way in and out of the gas station (not BP, Arco or AM/PM franchise) I had to avoid being hit by a caravan of jeeps and trucks returning to the gas station after apparently joyriding on some dirt road in the mountains. They were getting snacks and gas.

I will have trouble celebrating Independence Day this year. Most everyone will go to barbeques and joyfully eat GMO corn off of paper plates and drink out of plastic cups. There will be burgers and buns and I won't want either for the buns are derived from GMO wheat and the burgers are from are a noxious mix of flesh and feces of GMO grain.

People usually are aware of the disgusting origins of their hamburgers, but they "don't want to think about it." People usually are unaware of the diabolical origins of genetically modified organisms used as food and they "don't want to know about it." I have brought up genetically modified organisms as food with many people and certainly many of them think I am obsessed with food or "conspiracy theory" to even think about it. Definitely the overwhelming reaction I get is, "what you don't know can't hurt you."

If there were ever a conspiracy covertly seeking to accomplish anything, it would be easy. People are that apathetic. If there were ever a conspiracy to instill acceptable apathy, it has been accomplished. Short and sweet phrases which seem logical and even wise are accepted as real truths as if "ignorance is bliss." In Orwell's 1984 he penned "ignorance is strength" in recognition of such rehearsed and ridiculous sayings used as way of maintaining the status quo of harsh control.

It is true in a sense that if one ignores all problems and remains totally self absorbed one might be happier than if one questions actuality, for sometimes actuality is unpleasant. If one remains ignorant of problems and pays attention to nothing but the big game and the pretty view one might experience happiness. If problems which are "out of sight and out of mind" are kept unseen and not thought of, they continue.

We are a nation of idiots, we are not stupid. We are just engrossed in pleasing the id and its basic drives as to ignore all else. We institute protective ignorance and not only ignore questioning our own food, but even the apparent destruction of any entire ecosystem, that of the Gulf of Mexico. People don't want to think and don't want to know.

Independence Day is not about being independent of problems. It is not about pleasing one's independent id and remaining an idiot. Independence Day is a celebration of the U.S.A.; the place, its peoples, and its principles. Independence Day is a celebration of the Declaration of Independence and our country's founding in rejection of oligarchical dominance. The entire fabric of the framing of government in the U.S.A. was as a preventive to oligarchical dominance by the few over the many with checks and balances. The principles of the entire U.S.A. are based in liberty. To maintain the prevention of oligarchical dominance requires question actuality, stepping out of the id.

The current condition of actuality and reality in total must be questioned before celebrations. History has led us to the present, and some history is worthy of celebration, but all history is worthy of questioning. If a portion of reality is practically destroyed, like The Gulf of Mexico, place and people, then celebrations, the Fourth of July, is morose. History should be celebrated only if the present is a present, or at least not taxing. If such basics as clean water and open information are unavailable, celebration might be canceled for at least investigation.

Perhaps people would rather not think or question for answers might lead to new conclusions and necessitate action and new course. Until people begin questioning they will only have happiness in protective ignorance. There is no way to adjust the status quo unless we begin to question reality beginning with say the food we eat and the condition of where we live.

GMO as food is not natural. It is implemented solely to benefit institutions and not individuals. The 4/20 disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is the biggest environmental disaster in world history. Perhaps I'll "try not to think about it" on this Independence Day, but I am alarmed at the idiotic apathy of us, the US. Ignorance is strength to institutions.
