We didn't have to wait long. A short time ago the "breaking news" for all the cable news networks to run with was the collapse and death of Anna Nicole Smith in a Florida hotel room.
Earlier in the day the Pentagon announced that four more soldiers were killed in Iraq bringing the toll to 3,114 dead American G.I.s A few day before that the number of dead flipped from 3,000 to 3,100 without so much as a blip on the media's grim Iraqi reaper's radar screen.
We know enough about the Nowak affair for each one of us to write a novel. After all, the media alerted us to every fact and speculative fancy about this poor woman who obviously had a breakdown that became gruesomely and painfully public.
Anna Nicole's life has been public for years, and now they've jumped all over her death with the enthusiasm of ravenous hyenas picking over a rotting carcass.
There hadn't even been time for her body to be delivered to the local coroner's office, when the newsies had their "experts" lined up to conjecture and speculate on what killed her.
Where do they get these people? Do they keep a stable of so-called experts on every subject on Earth locked up private little green rooms just in case? And, why would these "experts" want to lay their reputations on the line to guess about something they know absolutely nothing about? Five minutes of national TV air time? Hardly seems worth it, since 99 percent of the time they're wrong.
We know more about these two women whose lives have absolutely no effect on our lives whatsoever than we know about where George Bush disappeared to during his last six month of "service" in the Texas Air National Guard.
What he was up to then, like the rumor that he was confined to a mental hospital, might have everthing to do with what is affecting our lives, the lives of our troops and the lives of 25 million Iraqis.
It must be the networks' bottom lines that we know more about these two women than we know about any of the servicemen and women who have given their lives and limbs for their country. Hell, we're not even allowed to see their coffins coming home, but we can know every last little gory detail about Nowak and Smith and all the other media distractions.
