We have a really cool new tool for adding images. We call it Image Gallery.

by populum

In the past few weeks, with the help and encouragement of managing editors Meryl Ann Butler and John Moffett, and our webmaster Vidya, we've added a new way to find images for articles. I'm pretty sure there's nothing else like it on the web.

The tool lets you search Flickr, select an article and when you click insert, our software automatically includes attribution and credit for the image. This is very cool and I believe a feature unique to the populum content management software Opednews uses.

Imagine. You've written a great article, but there's no image. Now, it's super easy to find an image and add it, already properly sized, to your article.

First step: Click your cursor where you want the image to go, click on the image icon that has the arrow in front of a video screen.

by populum

That will  open this small box:

Click on the film strip icon or on Select Image From Online Gallery.

That takes you to a page where you can type in a search term or a Flickr tag and look for creative commons shared images on Flickr and soon, on wikipedia, google and other places.

When you pick an image, you click on it, then you can add a caption, then click Select Image.

That takes you back to the article submission page. Again, you'll see this dialogue box:

To insert the image in your content (article, comment, quicklink, poll,) click Finish image selection.

That's all there is to it. The image will appear in the article submission field. When you publish it, the caption and the attribution will also be there.

If you have an image that's on your hard drive-- that you took, or you have permission for, you can use this other image upload icon-- a screen with a pencil. But be sure you manually add image attribution/credits when you use this approach.

BTW, you can't just copy images from other sites. You can't use images from AP or Getty images or other images that are copyrighted. And you can't assume that just because an image does not show copyright, that it is free to use. That's why using our system is the safest way to use images that respect permissions.
