Why is Bush Down in the South?

The steep decline of Presidential approval in the South is astounding. One thing Republican Presidents have been able to take for granted is their support in the South. No matter how bad things got, Republicans since Richard Nixon have relied on a repository of southern support to maintain their approval ratings, bolster a conservative caucus in Congress, and to serve as a basis for the pursuit of conservative social and economic initiatives.
