McCain had met Palin once, but their conversation—at a reception during a meeting of the National Governors Association, six months earlier—had lasted only fifteen minutes. “It wasn’t a real conversation,” said a longtime friend, who called the choice of Palin “the f*cking most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”
