Sri Lanka's government says 44 of its soldiers have been killed and 430 wounded in fighting with Tamil Tigers in the north of the island, while claiming 200 rebels were also killed. The heavy casualty figures came the day after Tamil Tiger rebels, in ferocious battles lasting over six hours, stalled a government offensive in the northern peninsula of Jaffna.
