Image from a quicklink The NYTimes is reporting that the DEA is ratcheting up its global war by focusing energy on Western African. "In a significant expansion of the war on drugs, the US has begun training an elite unit of counternarcotics police in Ghana and planning similar units in Nigeria and Kenya as part of an effort to combat the Latin American cartels that are increasingly using Africa to smuggle cocaine into Europe," the Times writes. "The aggressive response by the United States is also a sign of how greater attention and resources have turned to efforts to fight drugs as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have wound down." ...How we got to this place -- with a U.S. police force fighting in Africa, so that drugs aren't shipped from Latin America to Europe -- is a long story, but one worth telling as we grapple at home with marijuana legalization and abroad with what to do, or not to do...
