A lively debate is ensuing in the NY Times Opinon pages on-line. One of the comments on the page where this piece by Bok appeared, accused the debaters of being cynical, and brightly suggested that truth will prevail. I answered:I You are right, truth will out. and everyone will see that income inequality was not about the haves, and the have-nots, but about the' 'have-it-alls' vs everyone else. In about 500 years, historians will look back at this time when the democracy that was our republic, was systematically undermined by a cartel of 'have-it-all' barons who used their vast wealth to corrupt Congress and the supreme court, and then turned their attention to the electoral system and the executive office., History will shine the light on the nation that had a healthy middle class in the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century, and show that democracy ended back then!
