Every element heavier than hydrogen and helium was forged in a star and spread through the universe via supernova. In a new study out this week, researchers have seen the first direct evidence of gas clouds that date back to before any of those heavier elements appeared--they have no trace of metals whatsoever. It's a window into what the very early universe was like.
