Benghazi Libyan Police Have New Priority: Fighting Crime

For decades the police in Benghazi worked to serve Gaddafi's Stassi-like State power structure, while normal police duties were secondary, but now the police department, starting from scratch almost, is beginning to do what it is supposed to do, protect the citizenry. And surprisingly, for a city where security forces virtually disappeared overnight as gung-ho rebels with anti-aircraft guns on pick-up trucks appeared, Benghazi is surprisingly safe. Despite pro-Gaddafi propagandist claims, it is nothing like blood-drenched Baghdad in Iraq.
