Written in 1999: In late summer 2004, severe hurricanes left Caribbean islands and parts of S.E. United States devastated. Many lives were lost, with immense damage to entire cities. Some of the damage resulted from successive hurricanes.

More: Scientists reiterated that such super-storms may be a sign of things to come. "Global warming may spawn more super-storms", IPS noted.

IPS noted that the world's oceans are approaching 27 degrees C or warmer, increasing odds of major storms. At such temperatures, more water evaporates, priming hurricane or cyclone formation.
