Obama and the Passions

Argument does not seem to be winning the day. Obama's assumption: we are basically rational creatures who, left to our own devices, have little trouble discerning what our interests are and how to serve them. It's only when our passions get the better of us, when we are angry or fearful or exuberant, that we make bad decisions. This essay examines western Philosophy from antiquity to the present for the passions that move us.
