In the decades after laws and court rul­ings dis­man­tled legal­ized racial seg­re­ga­tion in the Amer­i­can South, the region went on an extra­or­di­nary tra­jec­tory toward build­ing a broad mid­dle class and eras­ing a legacy of endemic poverty. In a 'gilded age' that reached his­toric pro­por­tions, the South out­paced the nation in both pop­u­la­tion and job growth -- a gain of more than 30 mil­lion peo­ple & 25 mil jobs
