Senate Republicans have secured enough votes to mount a filibuster of Chuck Hagel's nomination as secretary of defense, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid announced Thursday, increasing the stakes in the showdown over the former GOP senator's bid to run the Pentagon. If, as expected, Democrats fail to muster the 60 votes needed to end debate and move to a final vote, it would mark the first time a Cabinet nominee to a national security post had ever been filibustered. |
