Pussy_Riot Sentenced to Two Years-- the tip of the iceberg
That's a horrific bit of news, that artists can't express without risking imprisonment. Here in the US protesters get arrested for protesting against ecological perpetrators or for videotaping police. Here's a page that's being updated regularly. Pussy_Riot Convicted, Sentenced-- With Updates

The arts have always been one arena where expression of ideas was permitted. Russia's shameful attack against musicians will be felt throughout the world-- hopefully with repercussions that lead to Russia reversing the decision, which CAN be appealed.
This is not the first or last time this has happened to musicians, as we report here: Musical Martyrs: 10 Bands Who've Suffered for Their Politics
At Opednews, we'd like to see more articles about p*ssy Riot but also about other ways the arts are being used for activism and how those efforts are repressed. We'd like to turn this sad news into something positive-- by showcasing more musicians and artists standing up, using their talents and visibility to make a difference, just as Madonna spoke out from her stage position, speaking for p*ssy Riot. Of course, there are also idiot artists, like the heavy metal rocker reported on here: Megadeth singer's stunning claim: 'Obama staged the Colorado movie massacre', By Veronica Roberts
Opednews fights every day for human rights, for rights of expression, and it acts as a central outlet for news on protest and activism-- like no other site. It does it with reader support and we need that support more than ever this month.
Today, we have a new writer, Ahmad Barqawi, from Amman Jordan, with one of the best takes on the Syrian Revolution I've read so far. Check it out here: Syria: Turning Back the Clock on the Arab Spring
I had a chance to get together with Steve Lendman on Wednesday, in Chicago. This is one dedicated man on a mission, writing two, sometimes three articles a day.
Steve has won acclaim as a Project Censored writer and even received an award from a Mexican Journalism organization. Here's a pic of the two of us.

Steve's been writing with Opednews for over six years.
When he started, he was our 194th member. (here's his member page. with over 1900 articles.) Now we've signed up over 60,000, and thousands of them have written for us, like one of our newest, Ahmad Barqawi, from Amman.
We do things differently at Opednews-- and those differences make a difference around the world.
Please help us to keep making those differences.
