Palin Ad Starring Ted Stevens Already Scrubbed From Palin's Campaign Website, by Greg Sargent - August 29, 2008, 1:58PM

from Texas for Obama:

Sarah Palin denies the opinion of 99+% of the world's climate
scientists, as well as the vast majority of its citizens:

What is your take on global warming and how is it affecting our country?

A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state,
because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to
being man-made.

Head in the oil sand, Sarah?

Can someone tell me how running a state that has a total population that is
smaller than my home town of Austin, TX (only like the fourth largest city
in Texas)...makes them qualified to run this country on my behalf?

You know, I felt a pang here. A smarting in my conscience. When I was in grad school (architecture at Columbia), I was treated badly by both my male and my female classmates. The women dressed very smartly, and I didn't have any money after paying for school to do the same. When I look back now, I cringe at what I wore, but I tell myself that it was the early to mid-eighties; lots of people dressed badly, with padded shoulders, overly full knee-length skirts, and so on. I wore a bit too much make-up as a compensation. Once, a very handsome guy I knew (I think he modeled), very gently told me that I would be so much prettier even with less eye-liner. I still think of him and how he tried to give me some good advice, very kindly. I think of him every time I put on my very sheer make-up now, or wear none, which I do nearly all the time, which I couldn't have imagined back then.

One day, my partner in design studio for a project hung -- or I thought it was him -- a picture of Ava Gardner above my desk.

I was devastated.

The message was clear. I never felt pretty, but I was considered pretty and feminine, and these things just weren't considered compatible with being serious.

People asked me if I had been a cheerleader in high school. I was baffled. I asked why, and they said, "Oh, your enthusiasm." I was deflated. I had been so far removed from that in high school. My enthusiasm, positive or upbeat attitude were disdained.

What's more, I had graduated with honors from Barnard. No sororities even there.

I have no problem with the fact that she is considered pretty or could win or come in second for a beauty pageant. If I take issue with it, it is only the angle that McCain seems to gravitate towards women who he considers attractive, and then, possibly dumps them when they are no longer -- the LA Times story about the circumstances of the end of his interest in his first wife, and his pursuing his present wife -- as attractive or alluring, and that it is possible that this factor weighed in his choice of a VP candidate because it is part and parcel of his view of women.

That is conjecture.

I appreciate your balancing the beauty queen image of her with the athlete image of her. Think Anna Ivanovic or Maria Sharapova!

Begala: McCain's VP choice unqualified to be heartbeat from the presidency

Choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is "shockingly irresponsible," he says

Begala says choice makes McCain's age, health, and judgment central issues

By Paul Begala
CNN Contributor

Editor's note: Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist and CNN political
contributor, was a political consultant for Bill Clinton's presidential
campaign in 1992 and was counselor to Clinton in the White House. Begala is
not a paid political consultant for any politicians or candidates.

Paul Begala says McCain's VP choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is completely
unqualified to be president.

(CNN) -- John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the
neck up.

"In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate he is not
thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will
have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is
impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her
to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have
chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly
irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in
the campaign, as does his judgment.

In choosing this featherweight, McCain passed over Tom Ridge, a decorated
combat hero, a Cabinet secretary and the former two-term governor of the
large, complex state of Pennsylvania.

iReport.com: 'McCain pick might be a gimmick'

He passed over Mitt Romney, who ran a big state, Massachusetts; a big
company, Bain Capital; and a big event, the Olympics.

He passed over Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas senator who is knowledgeable
about the military, good on television, and -- obviously -- a woman.

He passed over Joe Lieberman, his best friend in the Senate and fellow Iraq
Kool-Aid drinker.

He passed over former congressman, trade negotiator and budget director Rob
Portman.

And he also passed over Mike Huckabee, the governor of Arkansas.

For months, the McCainiacs have said they will run on his judgment and
experience. In his first presidential decision, John McCain has shown he is
willing to endanger his country, potentially leaving it in the hands of
someone who simply has no business being a heartbeat away from the most
powerful, complicated, difficult job in human history._______________________________________

Palin's relationship with Stevens Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 1:40 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: 2008, McCain

From NBC's Doug Adams
Ted Stevens, the grand-daddy of Alaskan politics, has a wary relationship with the new Republican VP pick -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

When Palin was running for governor in 2006, she ousted long time Alaska fixture Frank Murkowski in a hard fought primary. Stevens and Murkowski are long time friends and Palin was able to defeat the sitting governor by running on ethics and clean government reformist platform.

Stevens ultimately came to endorse Palin, but it was late in the game. He endorsed her less than three weeks before the general election, although he did cut a television advertisement for her.

In July of last year, Palin shocked and angered Stevens by publicly criticizing him for his role in the VECO scandal and called for him to speak out about it.

"I think I join others in wanting to know of the senator's innocence," Palin said. "Right now, we're not hearing anything."

When Stevens was indicted last month for month on corruption charges, Palin said the indictment "rocks the foundation of the state" and added that she shares with others "dismay" and concern.

Stevens is running for re-election to the Senate this year, and he is in a tough race. He survived his primary last week, despite the fact that Palin backed his opponent. But in the general election, Stevens is trailing in the polls to the popular Democratic mayor of Anchorage, Mark Begich.

But the relationship between Palin and Stevens is not completely frosty, and he needs her help. Palin is by far the most popular politician in Alaska right now, with approval ratings above 80 percent.

They came together this summer for a joint press conference on energy initiatives. Both support drilling in ANWR, and Stevens has lent tacit support for Palin's effort to build and pay for a natural gas pipeline through Alaska.

And Stevens went out of his way to compliment Palin this summer in interviews, saying she was on the right track as governor, praising her plans to handle the state's energy crisis and telling Alaskans she'd make a good vice presidential pick for McCain.

"People come up and ask me what is she like and how is she doing," he said. "I've been asked that, and I've told them I think she would be a good vice president."
