President Bush's admonishment of Congress for passing the Stem Cell Research Bill leads to a, "Hey, wait a minute!" moment. :::::::: This is not a personal or political comment on the use of stem cells, just simply a "Hey, wait a minute" moment. Today, Congress passed a Stem Cell Research Bill, 247-176 (35 short for a veto override). It's no surprise that Bush intends and will veto this bill. But, it's his indignation over what this would mean if it were to become law that leaves me shaking my head. Bush declared, "If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers would for the first time in our history be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos." "Crossing that line would be a grave mistake. For that reason, I will veto the bill passed today," he added. Next time Congress makes another tepid attempt to end the war, you suppose they might explain to Bush that the majority of taxpayers don't want to contribute to the deliberate destruction of U.S. servicemen and women and Iraqis. Today, our taxes paid for the destruction of the 3,501st U.S. life. I'll never know how many pregnant Iraqi women, how many infants and children were killed today in this war with the support of my tax money. Maybe a Stem Cell Research Bill could include an opt out for taxpayers who feel morally compelled not to support it. Maybe it's time for those of us opposed to the endless killing in this war to opt out too.
