Today a news item carried by several Pakistani newspapers quoted a White House spokesman as saying that the United States favours martial law in tribal areas. Is this not a double standard on the part of US leadership?

::::::::

The United States, which always remained in the forefront in pushing for democracy and esnuring human rights, has now been favouring martial for tribal areas situated on Pak-Afghan border. The news item quoting White House spokesman in this regard stunned many in tribal areas as according to them, the tribal areas have also the law, but that law was never used.

This is the fact the army operation was a must as terrorists were bent upon to destroy the world. They have killed hundreds of tribesmen without any reason. They were planning terror attacks in the world. But elimination of terrorists then there is need of promulgating martial law. The people of tribal areas have been living in a very difficult situation as on the one hand terrorists have been killing them, but on the other hand troops have also been targetting them.

There is no reason that we may believe that rule of law cannot be ensured in tribal areas. Now the situation is favourable for introduction of democracy in the areas. The first thing the world has to do build schools and colleges for imparting education to tribal youth. The perminent stay of the army can be harmful for the world peace in future.

The army can play a role in building the civilian system which collapsed after the entry of terrorists in tribal areas. But there is need of sincere and honest leadership, who really believe in rule of law and democracy. But the statement that US favours martial law will certainly tarnish the image of the United States. The US in a better position to introduce democracy in the tribal areas. The tribesmen will remain grateful to the US if she succeed in ensuring rule of law in tribal areas. But martial law is not the right anwser to the question.
