News on the Animal Front

Message Suzana Megles

Maybe you are like me - you get oodles of petition requests
from environmental groups and animal causes on Facebook or
Care2. I certainly take the few minutes it takes to sign them.
But  there are also other news items which interest me.  Here
are some of them.

AG/GAG LAW -CALIFORNIA.

This week I can start with a good piece of news from Animal
Place in California.  In bold type it read "THE CALIFORNIA
AG-GAG BILL IS DEAD."  Good news!

Per Mari Beach -the Education Director for Anima l Place -the
bill is dead because of all the phone calls, letters, and
e-mails sent to the author of the bill who chose to with draw
it because of them.  Kudos to all who responded in this
compassionate way.

Hopefully, the other states considering AgGag laws will also
be able to proclaim victory against them too.  I f there is cruelty
to farm animals on a farm or CAFO, it SHOULD be  reported and
the people who cause it should be  prosecuted.

I think Martin Luther King Jr. said something profound which
can apply here- "Our lives begin and end the day we become
silent about things that matter."  Surely, stopping the
mistreatment of our poor innocent farm animals is  something
that matters.

LAST CHANCE DOG RESCUE ALABAMA.

Sandra who lives in Alabama sends out a posting every day regarding
the need to help any  poor helpless, and suffering dog  reported
to her for posting. This day the dog in need was in Tennessee.

Elizabeth wrote: "She is suffering. Can anyone go pick her up-
take to vet?  Will pay for vetting,"  She further explained-
that her busband was working in Memphis and saw a tan female pit
bull sleeping in the trash at a housing complex. "She has two
wounds which actually looked rather like deflated balloons, one
on either side of her tail.  She is abolutely filthy, very
skinny, and seems to be in pain.  However, she was wagging her
tail as she came to her husband to sniff him.  We don't live in
Memphis and my husband couldn't do anything while he was there
working. I have been trying to contact Pit Bull Rescues closer
to Memphis. We are willing to make a donation to whatever group
will help  her."

Two thoughts came to mind as I read this - what beautiful
compassionate people - this woman and her husband.  And the second-
how shameful that no one in the vicinity did anything to help this
suffering pit bull. But sadly, this is not unusual.  People generally
seem to be indifferent to suffering such as this. Imagine that
Sandra has a new story of dog suffering every day and she has
been doing this for a very long time now.   If they could, they
would each send you a little wet kiss!

Though I cannot help financially, I always say a little prayer
that the circumstances become favorable for the suffering dog.

STOP ANIMAL KILLING CONTESTS IN NEW MEXICO.

Joe on Facebook so well described the feelings of so many of us
who see animals as part of God's creation.  He  wrote ".... we are
subjected to animals being snared, killed, by gutless men who
in mid-life want a victory and cannot understand the pain and
suffering they create, not just for that wolf or coyote or bear,
but for us.

GOOD NEWS- OBAMA MOVES TO BLOCK HORSE SLAUGHTER.

I recently e-mailed my concern to the president that he is cutting
Social Security benefits to senior citizens to balance the budget.
Completely a bad idea.  I hoped I asked him why he is not cutting
subsidies to Big Oil and Big Ag instead.
But today with this good news for the horses, I made it a point
to thank him. Most Americans do not want to see horse slaughterhouses
springing up in the US again.  We still have to work to convince
Congress to support FACE (Safeguard American Food Exports) which
would stop o ur horses from being sent for slaughter to Mexico and
Canada.  They suffer not only in horrible "accomodations" enroute,
but the slaughtering practices are very cruel- especially in Mexico.
Certainly this is a betrayal of American bred horses.

BULL BISON GUNNED DOWN BY THE DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK.

We are so lucky to have these iconic animals who could have been
lost forever by careless management, and then to read the uncaring
response of the department charged to care for them is very sad.
Per Glenn Hockett, Volunteer President of the Gallatin Wildlife
Association- the Department of Livestock's State Veterinarian has
the authority under MCA 81-2-120, an anti-bison law which empowers
the DOL to do about anything they want to our native Montana bison.
This  Ohioan agrees with Hockett - this is a bad law and it needs
to be repealed.
If you are a Montanan and want to object to the killing of the
bull bison, you can call the Governor's office at 406-444-3111 or
e-mail him at  Email address removed and leave a message for Governor Steve
Bullock.
Per the Gallatin Wildlife Association- the bull bison posed no threat
of brucellosis transmission to cattle.  Furthermore, they reported that
the bull who was killed was on public lands on the Dome Mountain
"Wildlife Management Area" when it was killed by the DOL. So there does
not appear any justification to kill this bull bison.  In my opinion
and others - his life was as precious to him as ours are to us.

TEXAS JUDGE MAKES A BAD DECISION

Unbelievably, Judge Sim Lake of Texas allowed two animal abusers of
small animals used in crush videos to walk free.  He believes that
torturing animals and filming their painful death is an activity
protected by the US Constitution.  Truth be told, the Supreme Court
also made this same asinine judgment, but for once- Congress came
through and passed a law against them.
Jayne Cvetanoski asked us to sign a petition on Facebook asking
Judge Lake to rethink his decision on Animal Crush Videos.
After reading what they purportedly did to their victims, I was
horrified that this j udge had so little compassion for them.
Ashley Nicole Richards and Brent Justice alledgedly created and
distributed violent sex fetish videos wherein was depicted the
torture of puppies, kittens, rabbits, and other animals.
In one video Richards was seen torturing a pit bull puppy.  According
to the Houston Chronicle, she bound the puppy's mouth with tape, cut
its back leg with a meat cleaver, slit his throat and severed the dog's
head from his body. Can you even begin to imagine his pain?
In other videos she purportedly was seen crushing crawfish, crabs
and lobsters under her bare feet or stilettos.  She also allegedly
stomped a kitten and then ground her shoe heel in the animals's eye-
socket.
What did these little animals do to her?  If she actually did these
things, she is a despicable human being.  To my knowledge no animal
ever tortures a nother animal.  Who therefore acts more rationally and
humane?

I don't know who said this, but I think it applies so well here:
"Man's inhumanity to man is only surpassed by his inhumanity
   to animals."

I have been concerned about animal suffering ever since
I received my first puppy Peaches in 1975. She made me take a good look at the animal kingdom and I was shocked to see how badly we treat so many animals. At 77, I've been a vegan for the (more...)
