Oh dear, oh dear, the yearly UK red nosed 'dig deep folks' scam is here again. Yet, again, we viewers must endure the BBC's highly paid TV presenters and exposure-hungry celebrities complete with their camera teams sent abroad at, no doubt, enormous expense to generate viewers' guilt with the usual panoramas of fly-encrusted ill babies amid filthy garbage clogged shanty towns.
Year after year for decades we are shown these images, but, still, the shanty towns continue to exist with their current poverty-struck occupants. This begs the questions, "Where have all the years of generous donations gone" and "Why are their own governments failing the shanty dwellers so abysmally?"
My sympathies go out to suffering folks wherever I see them, but, oh, I do get tired of the endless laid-on guilt trips inflicted upon us, the British public, by the media every time there is a disaster somewhere on the planet.
Millionaires, billionaires and multi-billionaires galore arrogantly swan about the world (how on Earth does one man become a multi-billionaire whilst another man barely survives in grinding poverty?). Apparently, there is always available money swilling about the world when governments require military might to be updated and to fight wars. This is, of course, until banks need to be rescued by taxpayers from their casino style, self-inflicted, bonus-enhanced plights.
Third world countries can have their national debts cancelled out at the stroke of a pen by the World Bank, but the great British public, whether they've prudently avoided living on credit or not, are expected to foot the bill each and every time. We all know we live or exist on a planet consisting of a ball of very hot molten magma covered by a relatively thin layer of cracked, congealed, buckling rock. Why, then, when the powerful elite remorselessly work towards globalisation, isn't there a global emergency fund poised and always ready to completely cover the costs of disaster rescue and rebuilding work as and when needed anywhere in the world? Instead, the disaster and poverty-trapped victims always have to feel that they are the recipients of charity, assuming they ever receive any of the donations that we are always urged to dig so deeply into our pockets to provide?
