Fear is essential: ‘Be afraid, be very afraid’ is the American condition. To live in America is to be beset by fear, anxiety and insecurity, to be surrounded by potential harm, enemies and evil intent. And the wolf is always at the door. A nation of optimists is the more usual self-representation of America. Repetitively, Hollywood films conclude with a resolution, a rescue, and the winners ride off into the sunset or snuggle into a warm embrace that reassures us they will live happily ever after. The formulaic ending, however, is necessary because the plot, the narrative, is founded on and propelled by fear and anxiety, the dark essential underpinning of the American condition. For America fear is an original, natural condition, the inescapable birth rite (and birth right), the inherited condition of a fragile existence that must constantly be defended. Without fear there is no America; constant recourse to fear is the motivating force that determines its actions and reactions.
That was until 9/11 and the brain freezing FEAR of potential terrorism in the USA became their ultimate talisman. Rove role model Herman Goering had it absolutely correct when he famously said:

And the public of course always buys it, pissing down their legs and practically screaming “please….take my freedom” at the Bush-Cheney junta who are only too happy to comply as Americans meekly snivel their consent to be subjugated in the name of the never ending phony Orwellian War On Terror.

A reach? If our Army can’t make short work of a half dozen pathetic freaks on their home turf then we are fucked far worse in Iraq that even the most pessimistic of doomsayers have been unable to imagine so far. On any given day there are hundreds if not thousands of potential terrorist plots that show up on the threat matrix – very convenient that the big bust comes on the same day that the announcement that 35,000 more troops are getting shipped off to join the ‘surge’.

I might add that in the case of Republican pedophiles trolling for young boys (or in rare instances young girls) to lure into unspeakable acts of perversion that it’s at least partially true – the right-wing scum is the biggest threat to America and the very concept of human decency that has EVER existed in my lifetime.
The usual fifth columnist scum on FOX and hate radio will be all over this – “THEY’RE ALREADY HERE!!!” will top the Republican talking points for days to come. But strangely (or maybe not so) absent in the pathetic pocket media was the recent domestic terrorist plot to detonate a nail packed homemade bomb at an Austin, TX abortion clinic. But why offend the Randall Terry/Eric Rudolph fan club - especially when the fears and loathing of the unwashed masses of the lumpen Republican rubber fetus waving dead enders of the base will have to be nurtured for next year's election if the kingdom come of a theocratic crusader state is to have any chance of continuing to grow like the rapidly metastasizing cancer on the body politic that it has been for the last quarter century.
