A Piece of the Political Pie: Ron Paul's 10% in Iowa

I am reminded of the famous pie-eating scene from Stand by Me after watching the Hawkeye Cauci the other night. The results I saw were not very surprising: the majority of people cannot stomach the candidates that are being forced down their throats.

For the Democrats, Barack Obama took the lead. What might not be so obvious to people through a cursory glance of the statistics is how he accomplished this feat, despite Edwards winning the entrance polls. I have an inclination that his success could be attributed to the perception that he is the lesser of the evils in the race. The people who went out in support of Dennis Kucinich were encouraged by the man himself to put their support behind Obama. Because the results of the Democratic caucuses are only given in percentages, I assume that many of those who favor Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, Mike Gravel, and Bill Richardson were inclined to do the same. When all was said and done, the pie chart shown on CNN (so we can make visual sense of these crazy things called “numbers”) indicated Obama got his fill, Edwards carved out a respectable chunk, and Clinton must be on a diet, because she seems to have gotten more pie on her face than in her stomach. I would be remiss in not mentioning that even Big Bill Richardson got his sliver. Good for him.

So is Obama the front-runner? It is hard to tell, but he is looking more formidable every day. The Democrats have been fooled into thinking that Obama is a candidate of “change”. Unfortunately, he is nothing more than a big-government, socialist hack with good rhetoric and little substance. Anyone who believes that the United States would leave Iraq and Afghanistan (and the other 700 bases around the world) under an Obama presidency is terribly naïve. The financial situation would continue to worsen as he spends/taxes the American people into oblivion. However, the fact that a Clinton came in third shows that the American people are truly looking for a change in Washington, but are simply misguided when it comes to the best alternative. The best choice most certainly could not be on the Republican side, could it? Howard Dean was interviewed on CNN and made the comment that NONE of the Republicans were against the war. Conscientious Democrats watching the show are told that they have no alternative than to support one of the terribly flawed candidates being offered as their front-runners.

Looking over at how the Republican pie was divvied up gave me some cause for optimism, though. Under orders from God, Huckabee forgot he was a former glutton and devoured as much as he could, coming in as the strong winner. His slice was large, but meaningless, as the vast majority of Americans would never support such a terrible man who abuses the peaceful teachings of Jesus as a means to very violent ends. He does not have the funding to launch a real campaign across the country, while also defending himself from his many critics and disturbing record. Romney came in second, but he seemed a little bit disappointed as he had tried to bribe the waitress into slicing him off a bigger portion (after flirting with her did not work). The “big names” like McCain and Thompson learned how to share after watching some Bert and Ernie and ended up pretty much tied for third. However, looking at CNN’s chart, it looked as if someone had stolen a piece of the pie from the GOP! There was just an unlabeled grey area devoid of any fruit-filled deliciousness. Where did it go and who took it?

Well, it is pretty apparent that the missing slice was not listed because it is humble pie, and of a different nature than the Huckleberry pie that was being devoured across the state. In not labeling this section, CNN joined with Faux News in the ridiculous censoring of Republican Ron Paul’s strong support. In fact, Ron Paul took in more than the twice the votes of the destitute Rudy Giuliani, “America’s Mayor” and former “Time Person of the Year.” It turns out that slighting the Revolutionaries is not a very strong financial decision these days for CNN or Faux as their stocks continue to plummet. People do not take kindly to a news station that so blatantly ignores a candidate who espouses the ideas of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and actually considers the Constitution to be more than a piece of paper.

Luckily, Ron Paul and his supporters do not view gaining delegates at the Iowa Caucus to be a defeat. He sat down at the table with the “Big Boys” and did not go away empty-handed. His piece of pie was not huge, but it only serves as an appetizer to the feast that is to come. My appetite has been whet.
