The Fallacy of "Gun Reform" Laws

Message JON LARSEN

When the social-inequality problems are solved, when everyone who wants a job can get a job, when mental health is a priority for our society and multiplying the wealth of the greediest of the greedy is not, when education isn't neglected because of corporate empire-building and we stop having wars of aggression for their benefit, then we could have very little cause to attack gun ownership of law-abiding citizens. Gun deaths are caused by a corporate-dominated government that promotes inequality in housing, health, and mental-health care, education, voting rights, and jobs that could provide a fair standard of living for all. When students are free from bullying, attend schools that provide them with a good education in a safe environment, there will be far fewer students so disturbed that they vent their frustrations through attacks against teachers and other students.

What is being proposed is an assault against the law-abiding gun owners.  This will reduce deaths in schools and movie theaters? I think not.

There are many, many gun laws on the books in every state. The existence of these gun laws doesn't keep guns out of the hands of felons.

If a felon steals a gun to use in a robbery or buys a gun he is breaking the law. Have more repressive laws and he'll break them, too. He's a felon, right? Existing laws that are not enforced protect nobody. More gun laws will protect NO children. Adults who are violent and beat their spouses or their children are prohibited by current LAW from purchasing ANY guns. Children are prohibited by LAW from owning guns or using guns without a responsible adult present. Enforce the existing laws.

Many seem to believe the lie that there are no background checks when guns are purchased through licensed dealers. Background checks are done using states records and those of the FBI.

Additional "Gun Reform" being proposed serves to distract us from the real problems that we face. If 92% of Americans, 89% of Republicans  and 74% of NRA members (a "Gun Reform" claim) believe that additional laws will save kids' lives, there are too many who are sadly mistaken. They have been overwhelmed by the press and the government's efforts to promote restrictions on gun purchasers and not restrictions on the criminal element of our society. Additional laws won't save the lives of children or adults.

Change the society that is so sick that it APPROVES of killing American citizens anywhere in the world with Obama's drones and that APPROVES of the torture of Bradley Manning and of foreign patriots who fight against corporate/ U.S. government empire-building.

Influence Hollywood and New York, with their obsession with violence in movies and television shows that glorify those federal agencies that violate dishonest and honest people's Constitutional rights, to produce better shows.

We seem to be moving toward national gun registration, which will not reduce mass murders. National gun registration will not save lives. National registration of guns and gun owners would be a disastrous mistake that will harm only the law-abiding citizens.  Further, it will serve to expand the BATFE, a government agency that has shown way too much enthusiasm and irresponsibility by turning guns over to Mexican drug-lords, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of Mexican citizens and some U.S. citizens as well and promoting the demand for more severe forms of "Gun Reform."  More gun laws are not needed.

Let's decriminalize marijuana to remove the huge profit motive for the Mexican drug cartels. Legalization would mean that greedy pharmaceutical companies and executives would reap the huge profits. Decriminalizing marijuana is a good idea not promoted by the corporate world and/or the U.S. government. Legalization is a bad idea that finds favor with the greediest of the greedy.

Let us solve our problems with honesty and well-reasoned society-reforming steps, not with emotionally charged, illogical "Gun-Reform" laws.

Let's stop being corporation-controlled sheep who don't know how to think for ourselves.
