So Obama finally came out and openly endorsed gay marriage saying, "Same- sex couples should be able to get married". Woo, woo.
This is what constitutes as an issue in America. Like abortion, it should be a no brainer, a given in this day and age, where adults can choose their own lifestyle with whomever partner they select as a simple right in a free society and fully recognized by the state.
Unlike progressives in Canada, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands, Belgium, Iceland, Portugal and Spain in Europe (and accepted though not authorized in other parts of the E.U.), Brazil, Argentina and South Africa, we're still having this over the top controversy over gays and lesbians, the "right to lifers" apoplectic over a woman's right to choose, have to endure the nonsense of "creationism" denying evolution, the same for global warming being a hoax, Obama's a socialist, wasn't born in the U.S. and that America is a Christian country, as if the separation of church and state and religious freedom aren't explicitly written in the Constitution.
We're at war all over the world, exercising hegemony, torturing detainees, killing innocents with drone strikes and missile attacks, even in countries we're supposedly not at war, still engaged in extraordinary rendition, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention, denial of habeas corpus, have "black" site detention facilities proliferating, provoking Iran with economic sanctions and two naval carrier groups operating ominously off the coast in the Persian Gulf.
Meanwhile unemployment, foreclosures, bankruptcy, student loan debt and the like persist while the banksters that created our current economic calamity are not only made whole again but remain essentially unregulated to continue their wanton ways as if nothing happened and austerity measures are forced on the states without implicating the big financial interests that sold those toxic, packaged, mortgage backed securities to the unsuspecting state employee union pension funds, public utility companies and other large investors, the big financial brokers deceived into purchasing.
And now, in the few instances where the financial "masters of the universe" are brought to justice they're fined a pittance (some $20 billion in the mortgage foreclosure agreement with the state attorney generals, this despite the hundreds of billions in fees they made from their nefarious, mortgage enticement deals) and allowed to admit no wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
Then of course, with the current election cycle in full swing, we're seeing a mountain of corporate and special interest largesse, now in Super Pacs, overwhelming and corrupting the electoral process, solidifying their hold and perpetuating the reign of the two major parties and the office holders whose campaigns they underwrite, as they continue their stranglehold and plutocratic control of the country.
These are some of the issues we should be discussing, demanding positions of the candidates, where they stand and what they would do about them.
Instead we're going to engage in Obama's endorsement of same-sex marriage and one would expect Romney and his merry band of right wing ideologues decrying the president's position.
Meanwhile the pundits and talking heads will be crystal balling which of them gains and/or loses support as a result of their position on same-sex marriage.
One can only shake ones head that same-sex marriage rises' to center stage as a critical political issue. It should be a right. End of story. To those on the far right; get over it and yourselves.
