Another day, another fresh round of gun violence. Today we focus on Detroit, the troubled city has witnessed an uptick in deadly gun violence in recent days.
This story is particularly heart-breaking. A 19-year-old woman seeking help following a car crash is shot to death on the front porch of a home.
Police, in a statement, said a woman was shot while on the porch. "The Dearborn Heights Police have identified the person who fired the shot and killed the woman," the statement said. Although no further details were released, the case has sparked speculation that a nervous homeowner may have mistaken her for an intruder.
This is where we are, Truthseekers. And the rabid righties in the NRA wants everyone armed, from womb to tomb, to guarantee our freedom, security, and liberty. Remind me again how gun ownership prevents gun deaths?
Elsewhere in Detroit, three are dead and another eight are wounded in a shooting behind a local barbershop, as the Chicago Tribune reports:
"Detroit police confirmed today that three people died, in addition to eight who were wounded, in a shooting incident on the east side of the troubled city a day earlier.
"It involved the occupants of three cars, two of them Chevrolet Impalas, that pulled into an alley near the back of the barbershop, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported, citing police sources. Police were looking for at least two shooters.
"All of the victims were male and at least one man was listed in critical condition on Wednesday night, the newspaper said.
"Detroit, which filed for bankruptcy in July, is experiencing its highest murder rate in decades. The city faces a declining population and fiscal problems that have strained city services and lengthened police response times."
School shooting, navy shooting, airport shooting, mall shooting -- sounds like a violent take-off on a Dr. Seuss book (One gun, Two guns, Red gun, Blue gun?)
Being an American has become a public health risk. Sending our kids to school, visiting the mall, taking a flight -- there is no safe place or activity where we can assume we won't get shot. And we have become so desensitized to our violent existence the near-daily news of mass-shootings barely have an impact. We accept the unacceptable. Dead school children. Murdered teenagers wearing hoodies. Car crash victims seeking help. Acceptable collateral damage in our absolute devotion to guns.
That is, perhaps, the greatest crime.
