Bob Gaydos opines, in his article, Can we just not call it food? about the disgusting contents added to every day foods, like frozen yoghurt.
If you are among the shrinking group of people who eat meat, especially if you eat it daily, keep in mind  Martha Rosenberg's  admonitions in her article  We're Eating What? 9 Contaminants in US Meat.
I have a simple answer a vegetarian friend turned me on to.
I check the label for ingredients. If they're not natural, plainly recognizable, simple ingredients, if the list is too long, if you can't pronounce ANY of them, don't buy it because it is processed and probably not good for you.
Then, I almost never eat meat or dairy and I'm very careful about the fish I eat, using the SeaChoice phone app to make sure the fish is healthier. One tip-- stay away from frozen fish from China, and, in general, fish from fish farms. Wild caught is safer (diminishing levels of fish in the sea are another issue.)
Take this simple approach and you eliminate at least 80% of the food and 80% of the aisles in the supermarket. I also eliminated the shampoo aisle a few years ago. I discovered that it's an interesting feeling to bypass an aisle. Now, I bypass almost all the aisles. That means I don't give business to companies that make food loaded with junk.
I try to buy local produce. I go to local restaurants.
There are a few exceptions. There's this Trader Joes' Chocolate cherry soy ice cream that is amazing when combined with some fruit, nuts and granola or cereal. Writing this prompted me to re-check the  label. I can pronounce all the ingredients. There are no chemical compounds, but there is vanilla extract.
I included the image of the anti-GMO protest because even old fashioned food-- corn, soy beans, etc. can be adulterated. We have one of the most evil entities on the planet, Monsanto, to thank for that.
We need GMO labeling. We need better, clearer food labeling-- transparency.  Actually, we need transparency as a major dimension of change. The  Sunlight Foundation  is a major leader in fighting that battle, when it comes to money and government. To get a frightening idea of how deceptive corporate  ownership can be, check out  Chris Taggart's youtube
video of his talk at personal democracy forum 2013, where he describes some of the hidden corporate connections his website, opencorporates.com, reveals.
Eating simpler, healthier, more local food is one way you can fight back against corporatization and globalization, and against the insane, unsustainable, planet destroying consumer culture.
