"Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue?"

"Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue?"

by Charles L.Riccillo

Comes November fourth, as we consider blue states and red ones, I have only one hope: that Obama and Biden will emerge victorious.

As the song incants: "Don't it make my brown eyes blue?" I've got brown eyes and have always wished for azure , even Mediterranean blue like those of my grandfather Bellitti.

The loveliest compliment ever paid me came from a beautiful young blond-haired, blue-eyed woman, a psychologist, who said, as we kissed at the window in the Rocky Mountain sunset, my "eyes are topaz." That placed me in the circumstance of having to stop seeing my shrink, so that i could start seeing my shrink socially.

But back to politics. Just yesterday I heard Senator Obama speak in Pueblo, calling for the end of red and blue distinctions, and the beginning of a new era. He enjoined us all to stop that silly distinction of color among states, and went on to say that no state was more or less patriotic than another. We are all, in effect, red, white and blue like our flag.

Can true change be implemented? Can we actually alter the system to the advantage of all Americans.

He said, "Yes, we can!" The crowd responded in kind. And then, in Spanish, "sí se puede!"

Sí, yo credo que podemos hacer lo!

We must believe in not just the Senator's ability to bring about meaningful change, but our own. I will even say, for Italian -American readers: "Sí, Io credo cosí. Il Senatore Obama é il gentilhuome e lui, uno Don molto rispettato, e lui puo farlo!" That means, "Yes, I believe it's so. The Senator Obama is the gentleman, and he, a most respected person, and he is able to do it!"

Obama and Biden have criss-crossed this country with that message of "the change we need." Imagine my surprise that he would even bother to return to Pueblo with his wife, so late in the campaign! For our city is a Democratic bastion, and perhaps they needn't even have done so. But they did, and were greeted with a crowd of over 30,000!

He asked the crowd to raise their hands if they were making more than $250,000 a year. And when the clear and overwhelming majority did, he said: "Yes I thought so."

Then he went on to say that they would have decreased taxes to which they could look forward.

He stated that he thought it was about time that the fat cats  earning millions and billions of dollars should get no tax breaks as in the past. And then Barack went on to say that it's obvious from the past that the "trickle down" theory was an abominable failure.

Then he proceeded to recount that, as his mother lay dying in a hospital room, his family had to wrangle with insurance companies about the medical bill.
