How's the Electoral System Working For You?
The electoral system in the U.S. has a well-known flaw in that it does not accommodate multiple candidate elections well. They happen, but the results are unsatisfying. Often, the winner holds only a minority of the vote and may be widely unpopular. Parliamentary systems avoid this problem, but adopting this system would seem to require many changes to our Constitution. Instant runoff voting is often suggested as an alternative, but even in that system it is possible to elect someone disliked by half of the voters. A third alternative, F&A voting is suggested in a recent article on this site. In this system, voters are actually asked about which candidate they dislike and the votes are counted so as to avoid unpopular winners. What do you think?
