THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER

To say that George W. Bush is the worst president ever is to give voice to the obvious. No serious observer could conceivably disagree. I have lived through twelve presidents, having been born in 1934. Until "W" the worst stain on America was "Tailgunner" Joe McCarthy. While he was unquestionably an insane demagog he didn't have the power of the presidency at his disposal so his despotism wasn't nearly as far-reaching as "W's". McCarthy's tyrannical impact was largely confined to America; Bush has unleashed his horrors throughout the world. The closest comparison to Bush in my lifetime was Adolf Hitler. Like Bush Hitler got all of his power through the skillful use of propaganda. Like Hitler, Bush has committed the international crime of making unjustifiable aggressive war and by implementing torture as an instrument of policy he has made America the most hated nation in the world. These things alone would qualify him as the undisputed worst president, but he has done much, MUCH more! He has assumed the dictatorial powers of the "Unitary Executive", unanswerable to congress, the courts or the people. He has raped the economy for the benefit of his wealthy corporate friends, turning a budget surplus into the largest deficits in history. He has ravaged the environment by rolling back laws designed to protect the environment and failing to enforce laws against corporate polluters. He has mounted a multi pronged attack against science by encouraging the know-nothing Christian fundamentalists and denying support for sound science on issues from stem cell research to the teaching of evolution. George W. Bush has disgraced America in the eyes of the world with his cowboy shoot-from-the-hip barbarism. He should be impeached, removed from office and turned over to the Hague for prosecution as a war criminal. It's only because I oppose capital punishment that I don't insist that he be hanged. Many other issues could be cited in support of his nomination as worst president, but I will just conclude with the observation of Francie Ducros, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien's aide, who candidly said in 2002 to a reporter "Bush is a moron", an opinion shared by almost everyone in the world. "Four sorrows ... are certain to be visited on the United States. Their cumulative effect guarantees that the U.S. will cease to resemble the country outlined in the Constitution of 1787. First, there will be a state of perpetual war, leading to more terrorism against Americans wherever they may be and a spreading reliance on nuclear weapons among smaller nations as they try to ward off the imperial juggernaut. Second is a loss of democracy and Constitutional rights as the presidency eclipses Congress and is itself transformed from a co- equal 'executive branch' of overnment into a military junta. Third is the replacement of truth by propaganda, disinformation, and the glorification of war, power, and the military legions. Lastly, there is bankruptcy, as the United States pours its economic resources into ever more grandiose military projects and shortchanges the education, health, and safety of its citizens." - Chalmers Johnson, Sorrows of Empire
