Generation of Vipers: The Original Sin and Continuous Crimes of America's Involvement in Afghanistan America's involvement in Afghanistan didn't begin in 2001, after the 9/11 attacks. It began in the last years of the Carter Administration, when he and his advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski set out to "give the Soviets their own Vietnam."

False Dawn or New Hope: Right-Wing Pact Imperils UK Paradigm Shift Well, it was nice while it lasted. Like many others, I rejoiced through the night at the astounding UK election results, which seemed to presage a much needed, much longed-for paradigm shift in the poisonous bipartisan neoliberal consensus that has imprisoned the politics of the UK (and US) for so many years. But this morning finds us in what might be an even worse situation, as a wounded -- and woefully incompetent...

Design Fault: Counterterrorism's Egregious Failures Don't Faze Our Leaders I think anyone who takes an objective view of the abysmal record of failure on the part of the official who as Home Secretary and Prime Minister has been in charge of UK counterterrorism policy for many years must agree with the declaration

The Whirlwind and the Candle: Terror as a Policy Tool - Chris Floyd - Empire Burlesque - High Crimes and Low Comedy in t Right after the Paris attacks in November 2015, I wrote two articles about the historical context and the continuing policies that led to the nightmare. (One of articles was denounced in Parliament by the prime minister and others.) Unfortunately,

Curtains for Comey: Rocketing Through the Looking-Glass With the Troller-in-Chief Whatever else you can say about Trump (don't get me started), he's a first-class troll: citing Comey's handling of the Clinton email probe in the last days of the campaign as his reason for firing him! The very action Trump had long praised as a

Battle Cry: Candidate Paul Appeases the Masters of War The war bill is yet another confirmation that Paul is damn sure running for president in 2016. More shrewd than his father, he knows that you must prove your bloody bona fides to the powers-that-be if you want a chance to take your turn at the top. No doubt the keepers of the coffers of our war profiteers are already looking favorably in young Rand's direction.

Distant Mirror: A Nation of Patsies, 50 Years On whatever else the mysterious Oswald might have been (including, without doubt, an agent or asset of the security state), the book's skillful mastering of the facts makes it clear that he was, in the end, exactly what he claimed to be after his arrest: a patsy. And so are we all, 50 years on: a nation of patsies, still being played by the brutal power-gamers of our unlovely imperium.

Shackles and Chains: Detroit as a Template for Democracy's Destruction It is an extraordinary -- and sickening -- spectacle. Detroit is now under the control of an unelected "Emergency Financial Manager," Kevyn Jones, forcibly imposed by the state governor, with all real power -- the power of the purse -- placed in his hands. And Jones is wielding this power with ruthless efficiency.

Unspeakable Things: The Liberals' Clumsy Dance Across Obama's Killing Floor The only consequence from the revelation that the U.S. government not only asserts the arbitrary right to kill anyone on earth but actually has a formal process to carry out this serial murder is that it will now be harder than ever to expose any of the crimes and corruption and sinister follies of the vast national security apparat.

Extraordinary Measures: Shredding the Curtain of an Enduring Atrocity God bless us for killing, wounding, traumatising, imprisoning, displacing or exiling millions of innocent people in a country that never attacked us and posed no threat to us. God bless us for killing hundreds of thousands of children through our years of sanctions, invasion and occupation.

Withdrawal Symptoms: Curtain Rises On Second Act Of An Endless War Crime Obama's announcement was yet another bitter sham. We are not ringing down the curtain on the Iraq War; we are simply beginning the second act, with new scenery in the backdrop, some new plotlines and characters -- but the same old dirty, bloody business of aggression.

Termination Notice: McChrystal Sideshow Masks Murderous Reality Two little girls were slaughtered last weekend in Khost. There they are, their bodies torn, their slender limbs twisted and broken, their lifeless eyes staring into eternal nothingness ... and we're supposed to care about the professional fortunes and political fates of the depraved, power-drunk thugs who run this brutal war machine?

The Poetry of Death: Patterns of State Terror Where Bush was content with smirks and hints about his assassination program, Obama is bold, sending his security chief to declare openly before Congress that the president now has the unrestricted right and power to murder anyone, Americans included, in cold blood, by the simple expedient of declaring his victim a suspected terrorist of some vague description.

Dry Heaves and Sucker Ploys: The Great New Iran "Crisis" Iran was building a new nuclear enrichment facility, as it is allowed to do by international treaty. The United States and several other Western countries knew about the facility for years. The facility, which is still months away from completion, is not designed to enrich uranium to weapons grade.

Tears of Fire: Mourning in the Macabre Killing Fields of Afghanistan Villagers were slaughtered while trying to siphon gas from two fuel tankers the Taliban had hijacked from occupation forces. The trucks were stranded in the ford of a shallow river, so the insurgents invited villagers to come gather the fuel for themselves. The prospect of salvaging a can or two of free fuel to help them get through the coming winter drove many of the villagers out into the dead of night.

Addicted to War: America's Brutal Pipe Dream in Afghanistan Looks like the "Good War" in Afghanistan is morphing even more directly into the "Drug War" that the U.S. government has been waging all over the world -- and especially against its own people -- for almost 40 years now with all the attendant authoritarian powers and degradation of civil liberties and human rights.

Shackles and Chains: America Leads the World Again once again, the latest annual rankings of the world's prison population are in, and, once again, 2008 found the good old US of A the winners by a country mile. No other nation in the world comes close to imprisoning more of its own people -- not in terms of raw numbers or by proportion of the population.

Unreality Check: Amnesiac Controversy Ignores CIA's Real Death Squads Both action and analysis in the most powerful nation in history now take place in a fantasy world, a simulacrum, a state of permanent amnesia in which facts -- established, confirmed, published -- vanish almost in the very moment of their appearance. Anyone who tries to reason their way through this feverish hallucination is bound to fail -- or succumb to the madness themselves.

Keep the Change: Obama Backs Bush's Political Prisoner Operation The Chicago gang has temporarily supplanted the Texas boys, but both pay obesiance to the big bosses back East, with the Bush-Obama "bailout" plans funneling trillions of dollars of public money to the mob kings of Wall Street. And of course, in classic gangster fashion, our bipartisan foreign policy elite use murder, violence--and the constant threat of murder and violence--to impose their will on the global neighborhood.
