It's probably obvious I'm a CYNICAL PESSIMIST. Why a cynical pessimist? Possibly it's the result of expending a full lifetime defending, first with rifle in hand and then with a legal pad, "truth, justice and the American Way." Observing the less than perfect result and the fact that it must be unending tends to incubate pessimistic cynicism.

There is actually a better answer though. As a pessimistic cynic, I know I'll always be either right or delighted.

I'm probably also affected by the fact I live at the very edge of the earth, about as far as someone can get from our nation's centers of power and still have dry feet. (Minor quibble to establish my unfailing honesty: I don't actually live at the edge. Nevertheless, I really can at least see the edge from here.)

The commentaries submitted to this website are some of the views from that edge, for the most part political and social observations and questions tinged (or perhaps more accurately, tainted) with humor to make the point.

The name "lawless one"? It was my call sign in Nam and ironic in other ways.

"BAILING OUT THE BAILOUT" Why the bailout is not working. Why it cannot work as presently administered. And, what might be done to contain the conflagration. What needs to be remembered is that it was caused by a con game. Unfortunately, you know the con is going to crash when even the con men who created it don't understand their own con game. Maybe it's time to convert some of them into convicts.

"WHO'D YA SAY WAS A TERRORIST???" A response to the drumbeat on 60s former bomber William Ayers as being a crony of Obama. Since the Republican leadership knows it can't openly attack Obama for the unforgivable sin of being born black, much of what they are doing, including the Ayers allegations, may be principally to give "cover" to covert racist Democrats and independents who are looking for a "safe excuse" to justify their vote against the black guy.

"I WANT A DIVORCE" Maybe Lincoln was wrong and it is time to divide the no longer "United" States in two. This latest nasty to the core election has suggested maybe we shouldn't keep trying to preserve a loveless marriage. So, as Thomas Jefferson once said, "When in the course of human events . . . ."

"EXECUTIVE DISORDER" Bush proposed new Executive Order allowing seizure of assets without court order or trial from anyone who is suspected might commit undefined violent acts which might interfere with the Iraq war and occupation. Kudos to Ron Paul for exposing it. Boos to all other presidential candidates for not exposing it.

"ANOTHER MICKEY MOUSE THEORY" Republicans are attempting once again to divert attention from their own propensities for potential voter fraud to others. In psychology, the trait is known as "projection." In litigation, the tactic is when you don't have the facts or the law in your favor, pound them. If not, pound the table.

"WHO LOST IRAQ?" Bush may have been responsible for the Iraq War and the incredible bungling that ultimately will result in us getting kicked out, but unless the Democrats and journalists kick him out of office, then they too deserve a swift kick in the pants.

"THE APPARENTLY PRANKSTER FOUNDING FATHERS" Democrats had a perfect opportunity to reverse some of the Bush attacks on the Constitution and they blew it. Democrats had a veto proof, court proof, way to halt or at least make illegal the warrant less searches of Americans. All they had to do was do nothing and simply let the existing "law" authored by Republicans allowing such searches expire. The Senate Jackasses kicked us again and their House mates may do so too.

"BUSHWA" Perhaps Bush is not lying (at least this one time) when he says he is not planning an invasion of Iran. Perhaps he isn't lying about that because he has something worse in mind - concocting a plausible grounds to justify or excuse using nuclear weapons against Iran.

REGRETS? REALLY? Bush's apparent lack of regret for the havoc and harm he surely must realize was caused by him. His only acknowledged regrets seem to be of the "sorry I got caught" variety.
