American democracy is broken. We must demand 2020 candidates commit to a fix If the Democrats make fundamental reform a "day one" commitment in the next administration, there is at least a chance that that commitment might help rally reformers among Republicans as well. This is the one issue that America is united about. We should at least find a way to talk about it that actually promises something real.

Obama's Pick of Kagan Recognizes the Difference Between 4 and 5 To hear the liberals talk about it, it sounds like they think we need a Thomas or Scalia of the Left. But nobody who understands the actual dynamics of the Supreme Court could actually believe that such a strategy would produce 5 votes. No doubt it would produce brilliant dissents. Right now, what we need is someone who can help move a divided Court, recognizing that we still stand in the minority. Kagan can do the job.
