How Democrats Can Win When Republicans Don't Self Destruct In the 21st century, Democrats lost three important elections because many voters cannot support a national leadership that appears insensitive to the issue of abortion. Democrats may win this election, but Republicans have shot themselves in the foot this time. Both feet. Maybe all eight feet. On a level field, there is no reason to think this 2006 election would have been any different than the last three.

A National Holiday To Honor America's Immigrants Our national holidays commemorate the birth of our nation, and honor our veterans, presidents, and great civilian leaders such as Martin Luther King. We honor with a holiday those who served our country and those who died in military service. But there isn't a holiday to honor those who actually built America, our immigrants.

An Unlikely Lesson From Tokyo Rose House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Democrats who voted against a bill that would establish a military court system to prosecute terror suspects "voted today in favor of more rights for terrorists." But, maybe they were voting to oppose the careless conduct of justice. The pursuit of justice requires a well-laid trail of safeguards and correction points, not just a trial. Ask Tokyo Rose.

Goodbye to a Special Mascot It looks like my Alma mater is going to retire its mascot. I remember the first time I saw Chief Illiniwek. On that day a stadium full of people held Chief Illiniwek in a position of honor and respect. A lot has changed since 1967, including our tolerance and respect for each other.

The Next Five Years of Fear The Republicans are using the fear of another 9/11 as a campaign issue five years later. If we had made any real progress under their leadership, they wouldn't need to invoke fear. But they have little or nothing to brag about. The real fear is that five years from now we will have made little more progress under their leadership.
