The plans being discussed in
Congress are not about health care reform. They speak to modest changes
in how health care is funded in order to provide and afford universal coverage. The plans that are being given serious consideration in the Congress all leave the insurance industry with their bloated bureaucracy intact. Then there is the "public plan" which relies on some yet to be defined government sources of funding.

While fear can be a mobilizing and motivating emotion that may result in extraordinary acts of heroism, all too often fear can be a crippling and destructive emotion. In the face of fear, real or imagined, we freeze, we can't think, we lose our creativity, close off our options and become narrow and constricted -- like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming care we fall victim.

The "stimulus package" [Recovery and Reinvestment Act] has passed Congressand the President has signed it into law. And that is a good thing. Something had to happen to begin to address the economic crisis facing our Nation. I am writing this not to argue about the specifics contained in the package, I am writing this to address the partisan processes that were in plain sight as Congress did its work.

"Israel has a right to self-defense," proclaim members of Congress. I do not take issue with that position; it is a right that belongs to every sovereign nation. However, what the Israeli Defense Forces have been doing in Gaza is not self-defense. It is naked aggression.
Israel deserves to be regarded as a nation among nations -- no less than others, but also no more.
