Slick Operator: The BP I've known too well Oil spills can be cleared easily if response is prompt and containment is complete. But this means maintaining an expensive, trained crew with equipment available around the clock. It was BP, not Exxon, that failed to do this in the 1989 Valdez disaster. And it is BP again this time that has cut costs by mothballing its safety team.

Bernie Should Take Satan's Advice Clinton ran a campaign that basically sneered at idealism. A permanent coalition of Bernie activists will quickly turn that sneer into fear. Palast pisses in the punch. Your turn? Greg Palast may be the only journalist with a New York office who works, as he says, "in journalistic exile." There, with a team of a half-dozen researchers largely supported by $50 donations from readers, Palast ferrets out documents and smoking-gun-toting insiders from Washington to Ecuador and uses them to gird his bitingly sardonic investigative essays that most American mainstream outlets won't touch.

BUSH STRAFES NEW ORLEANS. WHERE IS OUR HUEY LONG? Hurricanes happen, but death comes from official neglect, from tax cuts for the rich that cut the heart out of public protection. The corpses in the street are victims of a class war in which only one side has a general.

Off the Rails: Big Oil, Big Brother Win Big in the State of the Union There was that tongue again. When the President lies he's got this weird nervous tick: He sticks the tip of his tongue out between his lips. Like a little boy who knows he's fibbing. Like a snake licking a rat...

I WANT TO HURT SOMEBODY It was pure war-nography. The front page of the New York Times today splashed a four-column-wide close-up of a blood-covered bullet in the blood-soaked hands of an army medic who'd retrieved it from the brain of Lance Cpl. Colin Smith.

LOSER NATION America is a nation of losers. It's the best thing about us. We're the dregs, what the rest of the world barfed up and threw on our shores. I finally figured out what's wrong with George Walker Bush. He's so far away from his refugee loser roots that he just doesn't get what it is to be American. So he steals the one thing that every American is handed off the boat: a chance.
