"We have set the world ablaze, and we are the only firemen" The neocons and their neoliberal allies in United States spend a lot of time and energy meddling in world affairs, and then using the dire blowback as an unassailable reason for much more meddling. In every case it appears as though some of the volunteer firemen are themselves pyromaniacs, intent on immolating easy targets and then presenting themselves as the only solution to the inferno.

Cloud services now remove your fourth amendment rights to your data A ruling by NY District Court Judge William H. Pauley III has effectively resulted in revoking your ownership of your data if you use cloud data backup services in the US. Citing concerns about terrorists Judge Pauley ruled that if you turn your data over to third parties, then you no longer are protected by the fourth amendment.

Terrorism is just so darn sensational, who can resist? The New York Times this morning had at least 8 top stories on the bombings and manhunt in Boston, and just one on the Texas fertilizer plant explosion disaster. And this is while the disaster in Texas was still unfolding with funerals and a continued search for the missing. It wasn't as interesting that people are still missing in the Texas explosion because it wasn't a terrorist event.

Definitely Not a Wolf in Dog's Clothing; New Evidence on how Dogs are Different from Wolves Are dogs just funny looking wolves? Substantial scientific evidence indicates that modern domestic dogs were originally derived from wild wolf populations over 30,000 years ago, probably somewhere in Eurasia. Dogs can interbreed with wolves to produce "wolfdogs", indicating that they have not changed sufficiently to have lost the capacity to produce hybrids. Dogs share many similarities with wolves...

War Nation: Military Keynesianism's Iron Grip on Washington When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 there was discussion of a peace dividend, meaning a shift away from a wartime economy to a peacetime economy. This would entail "economic conversion" of a substantial portion of the industrial base of the US economy from "guns to butter" as they saying goes. We never did see a peace dividend, and military spending has more than doubled in the ensuing two decades.

Many Progressives will Sit this Election Out The progressive movement that propelled Barack Obama to the Presidency has very little reason to come out to vote for the Democrats this fall. If Republicans make gains in the House and Senate, it is not because they offer a better plan for America, it is because the progressive Democratic electorate have been demoralized by the decidedly un-progressive agenda of the Democratically led Congress and White House.

Dinosaur Murder Plot Thickens Most non-scientists have an unrealistic view of science as some edifice of knowledge that inexorably grows larger and more precise with time and effort. In reality, science is a messy business whose practitioners are often forced to toss out long held dogma after it has become part of the public consciousness. April Fool's Day is a notorious day for hackers to unleash their work, and this year is no different.
