The Cold Truth about Global Warming Presidential campaigns are good events for candidates wanting to test new rhetoric on stale issues. It seems that for every crisis that is well past its peak, new candidates find news ways to try to turn back the clock on damage already done. Global warming is one such issue.

We Are All Molly A hole developed in my heart this afternoon. It formed while reading about the death of syndicated columnist Molly Ivins from cancer. Ivins was 62.Her last column, from January 11, said: "We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war."

Our Son of a Bitch During World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly said of Nicaraguan strongman Anastosio Somoza that... "He may be a son of a bitch but he's our son of a bitch." Over the history of the United States, many presidents could have made a similar statement about ruthless dictators of varying degrees, one of which being former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The Underhanded Purpose of Unfunded Mandates One of the more meaningful policies that is obfuscated by conservative smoke and mirrors is unfunded mandates. Several American communities are feeling the pinch of numerous unfunded mandates, mostly created by Congress and implemented through federal agencies, which are blatantly illegal.

What You Can Do For Your Country In 1961, America was divided, its citizens torn by fears of war. To address this fear, newly elected President John F. Kennedy made a plea to the American people: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Forty years later, after America suffered an attack by foreign terrorists for the second time, President Bush told the American people that everything was under control and go shopping.

Don't Cry For Gerry Ford, America The death of Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, has the mainstream media in a scramble. The Folly of Arizona's Proposition 300 Life in Arizona can be quite anachronistic. While citizens here have all the conveniences of modern technology and skyscrapers that pierce the light blue sky, the state sometimes resembles the Old West politically and culturally. Take Proposition 300, a 2006 ballot initiative forcing undocumented migrants to pay out-of-state tuition costs to attend college.

With the Terrorists About five years ago, President Bush gave Americans a choice: we could either be with him or with the terrorists. It was an awful coercion of democratic principle but hey- we all knew back then that Bush could hardly spell democracy much less define it. The Mexicans Are Coming! The Mexicans Are Coming! The people of Arizona spoke loudly against illegal immigration on November 7. And it's pretty clear the electorate doesn't want illegal immigrants reaping the benefits of tax dollars. And if voters have to give their money to someone, they'd rather give it to a bureaucracy before giving it to illegal immigrants. This is hardly representative of the Republican ideal of "small government."
