As the November Elections Draw Closer:

By Frank Pitz

OpEdNews.com

As the November elections draw closer, liberal Democratic angst is becoming a regular daily “true confessions” kind of sideshow both in print and internet venues.  While beating their breasts and uttering a fervent “mea culpa” the Dems continue to excoriate themselves for their seeming lack of direction.  With much hand wringing and whining Democratic pundits and wannabes have fallen into a seemingly perpetual Rodney Dangerfield state of mind.  Perusing lefty magazines like “In These Times,”  “The Progressive,” “The Nation,” etc.  I marvel at the content and tone of the letters section as well as many of the articles that purport to offer sure-fire solutions to get the Dems back to the top of the heap.  Move left – move right – move center; attack Bush, don’t attack Bush; stay the course, alter the course – for Christ’s sake what a dizzying array of convictions.  The problem (for this socialist progressive) in getting the Dems back to the top of the heap is that heap is nothing more than a pile of slime constructed of corporate money, which has contaminated the entire Democratic process in this country.  The Bush crowd is firmly ensconced at the top of that accumulation of feces, groveling contentedly while mucking for their corporate masters – this is where the Dems want to be?  Judging from the size of the corporate dollars flowing into the Kerry campaign – although most of this is just good old fashioned “hedging your bets” – the Dems don’t seem to mind lolling about in some good old manure.

Nothing of substance is forthcoming from the Democratic camp for the simple reason that they have ceded the high ground to Bush and company vis-à-vis their continually being on the defensive concerning stupid television ads.  Thirty-second sound
bytes have robbed this campaign of any significance as far as issues go, and it is most assuredly contributing to the “dumbing down” of the American voter.  The media loves the circus atmosphere as they reap the financial rewards of an election carried out by competing ad agencies.  The media focus is on advertising and the groups behind the message, as well as whether or not the communication is true or false.  This presidential campaign has been driven to the lowest, asinine denominator, of “he lies,” “he lies.”  The American public by virtue of their infatuation with instant now is less issue oriented and more media-short-attention-span mesmerized.  We have become a culture addicted to the fast moving news ticker at the bottom of the screen.  It moves in a short (10-12 word sentences) storyboard of supposed newsworthy events requiring no intellectual capacity and no thought.

Bush is responsible for millions of jobs lost over the past three plus years.  Bush is responsible for the deaths of over 1,000 American men and women in an illegal war.  Bush is responsible for adding thousands more to the ranks of uninsured, as well as an exorbitant increase in health care.  America has no credibility – or respect – within the international community because of Bush.  Bush has added thousands of people to the poverty rolls, and has gutted education for America’s children.  Bush has raped and tortured the American people just as sure as his defense department neocons raped and tortured at the prison known as Abu Ghraib.  No connection between Saddam and bin Laden, no WMD, no biological agents, no terrorists ready to spring from Iraq and threaten the U.S.  Though it must be said that Bush is rapidly changing that scenario by virtue of his crusade against Islam.

These are the true life and death issues which should concern every American; these are the issues which need to be hammered home day after agonizing day until we enter the voting booth.  But do the Dems possess the cojones to shout this from the rooftops of this country?  The answer my friend is blowing in the wind of corporate financing and corporate thinking.  Play it safe, don’t rock the boat, talk about television ads and ticker tape news.  Forget about people dying for lack of decent health care, forget about people living in cardboard boxes, and forget about people losing their retirement savings.  See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.  Up with the corporate bosses and down with overtime for the American worker.  Enshrine Kenny-Boy Lay, and entomb John Q. Public.  Why talk of real issues when one has Arnold Schwarzenegger and his tirades about “girlie men” to enthrall the stupid masses?  George W. Bush is a pariah and as this writer has espoused for years: the apathetic American public deserve what they get.

Peace,

Frank
