| A
SELF-TERRORIZING COUNTRY
by Patrick Gunkel
Jesus Christ, the sickening crap one has to listen to in these
political conventions, when adult human beings
for whatever that is worth
unblushingly show themselves to be nothing more than children waving
rattles, reciting nursery rhymes, tooting horns, tearfully applauding
mindless mumbo-jumbo and transparent lies, and then crapping in their
diapers.
Now we have the Republicans exploitatively and shamelessly wallowing in
the fundamentally trivial killing of 3,000 human beings on one day
a mere 100,000th of the country
as though it were of some Apocalyptic significance, instead of a speck
against historical tragedies that would have towered over it like
cumulonimbus clouds; and milking the pain for all it is worth. Again and
again one tries to pound home the fact that such a ratio is equivalent to
1 death in three years in a town of 100,000
during which 4,054 OTHER people would have died of natural causes, car
accidents, falls down stairs, or a few homicides.
So who honestly gives a damn, except the bereaved
who damn well deserve their private mourning, stripped of politicians and
their simpleminded followers or melodramatic sheep. Who needs such
contemptible people about to play with truth and make knots of grace and
rub their feet on decency, in their enormous self-love and infatuation
with slogans fit only for parrots and toilet paper commercials? Who needs
their intrusive and protrusive ugliness?
People - wake up! Wake up! The school of life does not end with a
college diploma
it BEGINS when one leaves that bit of nothing behind one in the dirt, and
faces Reality at last, in all its turns and twists and noble crags and the
clear blue sky of ascending reason and dispassion.
The current fear of terror is commensurate to a quivering fear of ones
own shadow
which grows ever longer as the sun sets on common sense.
Neither you nor I have reason to fear terror from abroad, but if we DO
feel and give in to this terror, and fight this shadow, we
as a nation
will enlarge it until it stands over us like the highest and most brutal
mountain on earth.
There is in fact just one way to fight the few terrorists of this world
successfully and with dignity, but it guarantees their eventual
extinction:
By not giving them our fear, and largely ignoring them.
Give them more and they are more apt to feed on it and grow, and in the
end they will have us in their power, if they do not already through our
foolish cowardice.
Our statesmen must stop exploiting fear for their own ends.
Otherwise they themselves are little better than terrorists, and may
even become the worst terrorists of all, the people who have finally
stepped on the flower of human life, and crushed it.
