"Oh, Ye of Little Faith"

George W. Bush and the Powerless God he does not trust to protect him.

By Lonna Gooden VanHorn

www.OpEdNews.com

In spite of his insistence that the world is safer now because Saddam Hussein has been removed from power and terrorists are “on the run.”  Despite his pollyannish statements that so many Americans love him and voted for him that he won a “mandate.”  Despite the fact that he believes God wants him to be president, and that God speaks both to him and through him, George W. Bush trusts men, money and guns rather than God to protect him at next Thursday’s inauguration, by far the most restrictive as well as expensive from a security standpoint, inaugural in American history.

Next Thursday’s inauguration will be one of unprecedented security measures.   Six thousand police, 2,500 military personnel and agents of dozens of federal security agencies will be on patrol in our nation’s capitol.  A twenty-three mile no fly zone will be observed around, Dulles, Reagan, and Baltimore-Washington airports.  Black Hawk helicopters and fighter jets will patrol the skies over Washington D.C.  Bomb sniffing dogs will be everywhere.  The city will be closed down for one hundred square blocks during this “Celebration of Democracy,” which will be absolutely closed to ordinary American citizens.  Bleachers along the parade route which in previous inaugurations were available to the public on a first come first served basis, will now be doled out at $60 a pop through the auspices of Republican leaders.  A.N.S.W.E.R. and the Impeach Bush movement have, however, supposedly won the right to build bleachers at 4th and Pennsylvania, but access will be restricted along the rest of the inaugural route.  It will be interesting to see if the Bush people find a way to disperse the dissident groups.

Security teams are already testing the safety of food that will be served at inaugural events. At the swearing in, snipers will be on rooftops and specialists in chemical, biological and radiological terrorism with handheld detection devices will mingle in the crowds.  The Coast Guard will patrol the Potomac River for days before and after the inauguration.

If Bush is “better” for our country as far as security goes, and if America and the world are safer with him as president why should he need so much more protection than, say, President Clinton did?

Bush has said many times he believes God wanted him to be president.  If that is true, is it not reasonable to suppose that God has a special interest in keeping Bush safe, and that He would keep him safe even if very few agents were on duty to protect him?  Did Bush’s God not protect Daniel from the lions in the lion’s den and kept the fire from consuming Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego as well as protecting David from Goliath?  I should think if God really wants Bush to be president, He can see to it Bush stays safe without all that extra help.  Or are the men who might wish Bush ill more powerful than the God of all creation??

I guess God just is not very attentive or else He is quite powerless.  Or else Bush does not really believe God wants him to be president.  Bush believes everything that happens is “God’s will” after all.  Whether Bush lives or dies is “God’s will,” and surely God watches over him just as he watches over the sparrow, so why does he feel it necessary to utilize so much extra human protection?

I, on the other hand, am not at all convinced that God had any special desire to see Bush become president for either a first or second term, or that He often interferes in human affairs, so I believe it is necessary to employ reasonable security measures to protect the leader of the mightiest nation on earth.  But I am dissecting Bush’s  supposed beliefs, here.  If, as Dubya seems to believe, God really does want him to run this nation, surely God will put Himself out enough to see to it he is kept safe so he can do so.  But everywhere Dubya, and for that matter, Cheney goes, unprecedented and exorbitantly expensive security measures are put in place.

For my part, I believe if God had wanted Bush to be president He would have nudged enough more Republicans than Democrats to go vote that fateful day in November of 2000 so that Bush would have won the election honestly.  But just in case God was not interested enough or powerful enough to inspire more Republicans than Democrats to vote on election day, Katherine Harris and Dubya’s brother removed the names of tens of thousands of blacks from the Florida voter rolls prior to the 2000 election so that thousands of blacks, 90% of whom vote for Democrats, were not allowed to vote.  Neither brother, apparently, trusted God to deliver the election without their help.  And they also, apparently, do not believe God is averse to human agents cheating and utilizing dishonest measures to help place “His” man in power.

And, to keep “His” man in power, Bush’s God is not averse to Bush running a dishonest and dishonorable campaign.  It was, apparently,  okay with God that Bush and his agents used fear-mongering as the main component of their 2004 campaign, followed closely by bearing false witness against his opponent and flat out lying to ensure that Bush stayed in power another four years.  Plus repressing the Democratic vote in key states again, of course.  I kept a diary of their dishonesty.  http://criticaltolerance.org/story/2004/9/29/16222/3085 Can anyone imagine Jimmy Carter running such a campaign?

If Dubya feels a need to take such extreme security measures to protect himself from harm, he must not be as certain as he pretends to be that God is at his side.  He must not be as sure as his general Jerry Boykin is that “my God is bigger than your God.”  That his God is more powerful than the “God” that is guarding whoever sets himself against Bush. He must not believe his God is very big at all.

Besides being a coward, as he proved by his refusal to put himself in any risk of going to Vietnam and facing combat in spite of the fact he believed in that war, Bush and the right wing “Christian” Republicans who surround him, continually prove in countless ways both big and small that they are actually men of little faith in the God they so ardently profess.  They are the most dishonest and hypocritical politicians in my memory.  Our “values” president is not even demanding his daughters get someone other than the obscene rocker “Kid Rock” whose most common word in his songs is the “f” word, and whose lyrics are all about sexually using every girl he comes across, and then "doing: her mother, to headline their inaugural party.

Day after day Bush and his "Christian" cronies prove the gods in which they put their real faith and trust are the age old and universal gods of money, guns and power.

Bio:  Lonna VanHorn is a mother of six and a grandmother.  Apolitical until George W. Bush came on the scene and she recognized his special evil, she now spends her life trying to expose the truth about him, a truth which the main stream media seems largely to ignore. Knowing many good Christians, she is especially offended that such a selfish, greedy, dishonest man who cares nothing for the the truth or the poor, and who has no interest in peace, someone, in fact, who goes against almost every admonition Christ demanded of His followers, is painted as being a godly man.

Born and raised on a small farm in Minnesota, she now lives in New Mexico with her husband, a veteran who spent 18 months in Vietnam.
