I was born in California and deserted the U.S. Army in 1968. I have been living in Montreal, Canada for the past 34 years. I am a children's book author, French to English translator and scriptwriter. Living in exile, just across the border all these years, has been very difficult for me and for others as well. No matter how well we have blended in with our new country's culture there is still a reticence to think of ourselves as fully Canadian. I am now writing a film script for a documentary on the lives of American Deserters living in Canada and I am seeking financial support to complete my project. I have already gathered most of the necessary material, all that remains is a cross-country trip to interview other Americans like myself. I am also interested to know if the legal status of deserters from the Vietnam Era has changed in the past ten years or so. I accepted the President Carter discharge but it only allows me to travel to the U.S.A., not to return and live there as a citizen. Thank you for consideration.
Sincerely,
Richard Riewer
