"Backwoods" was born and raised in the Territory of Alaska; as a child he homesteaded on a lake in the woods with his parents and family before Statehood. He left the State for some "edukation" and found that podunk Alaska schools had prepared him better than the rich city kids and their private schools. That was his first serious encounter with the Outside world and it taught him more than the college did. He ran a commercial salmon fishing boat in the summers and ended up with a professional graduate degree from a prestigious University.
