AxisofLogic/ The 2008 Elections
To vote or not to vote, that is the question. The Axis of Logic editorial board came down on the not voting side, a reader disagreed, and I responded. Which side are you on?

Sheer Supremacy
The U.S. Supreme Court, the highest law of our land is an undemocratic institution unaccountable to the people, and the office of Supreme Court Justice is a patronage position. Who are these clowns?

Washington DC: Gone Phishing
It is as if we reported identity theft to the proper authorities and they told us, "Thank you for reporting this. Unfortunately, the law says that we have to allow the thief to continue to use your credit cards and bank account for two to six years before we can act. At that time you may file another report, but until then you must pay for any debts that they run up."

Boycott the War
(6 comments)
Rather than continuing to allow wars of aggression to be carried out in our name, some of us have decided to withdraw our consent, withhold our mandate, and retain our power to ourselves as we work together to establish a citizen-owned transparent participatory democracy where every vote will be counted, candidates can be held accountable, and government is restored to the people.

No In NOvember!!!
Activists all over the world are asking why we continue to vote in rigged elections where peace candidates cannot win, and the candidates who win cannot be held accountable. If we oppose crimes against humanity why do we keep delegating our power to those who do not? Is our government corrupt, or are we the people knowing collaborators? Sign the pledge!

Consensual Political Intercourse
People keep telling me that they did not consent to what our government has done to them over the past seven years, but I'm not sure I'm buying it. If they didn't consent, how could things like this have happened? What if they actually had consented but are now ashamed of it and are trying to frame a perfectly innocent government for rape?

Student Given Weapons in High School
(3 comments)
Military science courses (i.e., JROTC) are now taught in most San Diego City high schools. They are not required to include weapons training, yet many of them have high-powered pellet gun ranges on school grounds. This is despite the school district's zero-tolerance weapons policy and community efforts to teach young people NOT to use weapons.

Don't Vote It Only Encourages 'em!
Once again election mania has grasped the U.S. I wish I could crawl into a cave and hibernate until March or April 2009, when the new administration will have settled in and people will start to wake up and realize that nothing has changed.

Unintended victims of Gates Foundation generosity - Los Angeles Times

The more money given by big foundations, the higher the infant mortality? How can this be? Why are people starving to death while receiving expensive medical treatment? We can do better.

San Francisco Bay View - House of Reps votes 404-6 to pass the bill that legalizes COINTELPRO
Can't say it any plainer -- this is a bill to legalize COINTELPRO. I don't know if it has passed the Senate yet, but everyone should know what it is about, read this article, and read up on COINTELPRO if you weren't a victim.

The Fourth World: Swallowing the Blue Pill: frank talk on race and fascism in the US
(2 comments)
Why are so many whites silent? Because we're exempt. Well, at least some of us still are...for now...
Juan Santos writes: "As the US veers on a radical course toward fascism, the Democrats, who are riding high on a national wave of revulsion against the Bush regime, breathe not a word about reversing the legalization of torture or restoring habeas corpus; they say nothing about reversing the Patriot Act..."

Straitjacket Bush - Los Angeles Times
Forget impeachment.
Liberals, put it behind you. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney shouldn't be treated like criminals who deserve punishment. They should be treated like psychotics who need treatment.

The National Institute for Standards and Technology has been forced to admit that the total free-fall collapse of the twin towers cannot be explained after an exhaustive scientific study, implicitly acknowledging that controlled demolition is the only means by which the buildings could have come down.

Canada to Apologize to Arar, Pay Compensation
(1 comments)
Canada will issue a formal apology and pay $8.5 million to software engineer Maher Arar, who was mistakenly labelled a terrorist by Canadian authorities. He was then arrested in New York by U.S. authorities and shipped to Syria where he endured a year of torture.
Arar is also suing the U.S., which still has him on the terrorist watch list, despite Canada's having admitted their mistake.

The Making, and Unmaking, of a Child Soldier
(2 comments)
How many similarities are there between the African child soldiers' experiences and that of our own troops? How many of the survivors will ever come to terms with themselves after what they have done and what has been done to them? It is good to know that patriarchal values can be overcome, but how many of us would have the patience of the nurse in this story to even try?

BOOK REVIEW: The right gives away its guidebook - will we listen?
You have to scroll down for this one -- it's the book review published on 12/31/06.
In reviewing a book by a leading neo-con, Sirota explains how the neo-cons took control of the Republican Party by refusing to be a part of it and instead pursuing their own agenda. He suggests that liberals and progressives might do well to take a good look at a winning strategy.

National Latino Organizations Call for Moratorium on Immigration Raids
(3 comments)
Homeland security raids have targeted second- and even fifth-generation Mexican-Americans. They have created great hardships among immigrants and the communities dependent upon them. Recently, several contractors building the wall between along the U.S/Mexican border, were convicted of using undocumented immigrant labor. Current anti-immigrant policies don't make sense and must be stopped until they can be better thought out.

U.S. Stops Audit of Iraq Rebuilding
(3 comments)
Legislators are shocked, shocked they tell us, to learn that a clause in a military spending bill that they authorized will terminate the office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, which has embarassed the Bush regime with its reports on corrupt practices by U.S. military contractors in Iraq.
