So what exactly is a domestic catastrophe anyway?

Rep. Conyers Promises Post-election Impeachment Hearings
(13 comments)
While speaking on the topic of impeachment Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) promised that after the November 4 elections, he would pursue legal actions against the Bush administration. Conyers is in a unique position to initiate impeachment. As the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee... he has been the sole obstacle to impeachment occurring ever since he and Nancy Pelosi took Impeachment "off the table."

Democracy put on pause in Taiwan
Police stole Republic of China flags from citizens in Taipei on Monday, November 3. An unannounced ban on displaying the de facto country's own flag was sprung upon protestors who were hoping to harrass the visiting head of Beijing's de facto "reunification" board. Tibetan flags were also unwelcome. In fact, the whole highway between the airport and the city's fabled Grand Hotel effectively became a martial law zone.

A Last Push to Deregulate
(3 comments)
The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.
The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo.

U.S. Supreme Court permits execution of Troy Davis, Activists aghast
(1 comments)
This is disturbing news considering the ominous trends of late. In what has been dubbed a 'legal lynching,' the Supreme Court has refused to hear Davis' appeal even though seven of nine key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony since his 1991 cop-killer trial. The probably-innocent Davis looks set to die at the hands of the government in less than ten days. Visit www.amnestyusa.org/troydavis for details.

Congressman says bailout bill passed under threat of martial law
(2 comments)
U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman of California said to Congress that individual members of the House were threatened with martial law within a week if they did not pass the bailout bill. Since Posse Comitatus was suspended by executive order just over two years ago, Bush has the legal authority to use troops recently mobilized for the first-time-ever to do "homeland duty." Coincidence?

One man's China crusade
During his posting at Canada's Hong Kong consulate, diplomat Brian McAdam amassed reams of evidence that corrupt Canadian and local staff were selling visas and information to the Chinese mafia and other bad guys. Heath Ledger's Tragic Overdose Death And What Can be Done To Prevent Others
Tony Newman of Drug Policy Alliance was Heath Ledger's neighbor. He hopes America will now wake up to face overdose risk squarely. It is the second leading cause of death after traffic accidents, but it can be greatly reduced by distributing an opiate antagonist drug and by passing "9-1-1 Good Samaritan" laws giving immunity to those who call for help when a friend overdoses.

Is Our Fear of Germs Bad for Our Health?
Growing evidence suggests superbugs may result from overuse of antibacterial soaps, especially triclosan. Rather than stockpile buckets of disinfectant and spray every surface in the house every few hours, most independent researchers recommend that we settle for a stalemate in the war on microbes. But the home-products industry has other ideas.

China aghast at 'sacrifice' of 288 pupils
(2 comments)
The Sunday Times, May 6, 2007
By Michael Sheridan
Known in China as the '12/8/94 incident,' a tragic theater fire that killed 288 pupils threatens to focus long repressed anger of the masses toward Beijing's leaders.
The theater was also full of officials that night, and they all escaped because the students were told these words that haunt survivors still: "Everyone keep quiet. Don't move. Let the leaders go first."
