WHITE HOUSE SMEARS TO COVER INCOMPETENCE LEADING TO US TROOP DEATHS
(3 comments)
This is truly despicable. Yesterday in his speech at George Washington University, President Bush offered the latest chapter in the GOP's ongoing blame-the-press-for-Iraq narrative. Speaking of something called the Joint IED Neutralizer, which is meant to counter roadside bombs...Bush didn't name the newspaper. But his aides subsequently leaked confirmation to the press that he was talking about the Los Angeles Times. And guess what: It turns out that Bush left out a small detail about the offending article in question. Turns out it was about the fact that some military officials were angry that this potentially life saving technology still hasn't been shipped to Iraq, ten months after Pentagon officials recommended investing in research and sending prototypes to Iraq for testing.

PEW: Bush Approval Falls to 33%
(3 comments)
In the aftermath of the Dubai ports deal, President Bush's approval rating has hit a new low and his image for honesty and effectiveness has been damaged. Yet the public uncharacteristically has good things to say about the role that Congress played in this high-profile Washington controversy.
Most Americans (58%) believe Congress acted appropriately in strenuously opposing the deal, while just 24% say lawmakers made too much of the situation. While there is broad support for the way Congress handled the dispute, more Americans think Democratic leaders showed good judgment on the ports issue than say the same about GOP leaders (by 30%-20%).

A majority of adults in five Southern states that President Bush won in the 2004 election now disapproves of his job performance and says the Iraq war was not worth fighting, a poll has found. Less than 18 months later, Bush isn't even close to majority approval in any of those states.

Bush and the bomb
(3 comments)
Last-ditch nuclear talks between Iran and the European Union's big three did not go well yesterday, breaking up shortly after they began in Vienna. That was not surprising since there had been an impasse in negotiations for weeks now. But it was more than just an unfortunate coincidence that the session was held a day after George Bush, visiting New Delhi, struck a landmark deal allowing India to develop peaceful nuclear energy while staying outside the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), the world's most important legal barrier to the spread of nuclear weapons. This smacks of double standards that will make it hard to hold the line on this issue and gives some substance to the charge, voiced by an angry President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that opposition to Iran's nuclear ambitions - which he claims are peaceful - is politically motivated. Next week this potentially disastrous confrontation is likely to move to the UN security council.

U.S. Cast a Wide Net in Terror War
(3 comments)
CATCHES FEW GOLDEN RINGS...New documents on the Guantanamo detainees suggest the Bush administration has cast a wide net in its war on terror. But the U.S. has often come up empty as American troops picked up suspects with descriptions as varied as a Kazakh apple seller and a Pakistani millionaire.
Evidence against the apple seller, for example, showed he had been captured by the Taliban and forced to work as a cook.
In fact, the man told his U.S. military tribunal, he was only a cook's helper, and had never heard of al-Qaida or the Taliban until he was kidnapped and conscripted by Afghanistan's former hardline Islamic regime.

Frank talk needed before Iraq falls apart
(3 comments)
The world must plan for the disintegration of Iraq...Iraq is "teetering on the threshold of wholesale disaster," according to a new and frightening report by the International Crisis Group, a nongovernmental organization that seeks to ameliorate conflicts around the globe. That is, it faces a civil war that could eventually end the tacit international agreement that Iraq's current borders remain intact. The world must confront the possibility of sectarian strife that becomes a contagion, enveloping the Middle East, expanding Iran's power and embroiling Turkey, a NATO ally.

Threat of Iraq civil war escalates with every bomb
(3 comments)
Almost every day brings new attacks and every bloodbath deepens the desire for revenge...The mutual mistrust is also growing in political circles. Trouble was brewing Tuesday after interim Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jafari paid a surprise visit to Turkey.
President Jalal Talabani admitted that he had not been informed of the visit, while al-Jafari's own Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari conceded that he had only learnt about the trip through media reports.
Every bomb perpetuates the wave of violence and draws Iraq closer to a civil war.
The current disintegration in the country certainly seems to be heading towards that end, bringing with it terrible consequences for the unstable but oil-rich Mideast region.
Neighbouring countries such as Sunni Saudi Arabia, Shiite Iran, or Turkey with its historic claim on northern Iraq's Kurdish region, could be dragged into an inconceivable religious and ethnic war.

In the House, Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said he would proceed with legislation giving Congress the right to reject the proposed takeover if it was sanctioned by the president after the 45-day review.
Mr. King, who said he had already attracted more than 60 co-sponsors of both parties, said he worried that the administration was viewing the 45 days more as a chance to lobby Congress than to investigate security concerns.
"The administration has to educate itself," he said. "They have to conduct a full and thorough investigation."

Economy: Government hits national debt ceiling AGAIN
(3 comments)
With the federal government debt about to hit the $8.18 trillion legal limit, the Treasury Department last week suspended sales of special securities bought by state and local governments so that regular auctions of Treasury bills and notes could continue.
More such steps undoubtedly will have to be taken in coming weeks until Congress screws up the courage to increase the debt limit. At some point next month, Treasury will run out of such stop-gap measures and regular securities auctions may have to be postponed. Bush in India: Just Not Welcome
(3 comments)
For Bush's March 2 pit stop in New Delhi, the Indian government tried very hard to have him address our parliament. A not inconsequential number of MPs threatened to heckle him, so Plan One was hastily shelved. Plan Two was to have Bush address the masses from the ramparts of the magnificent Red Fort, where the Indian prime minister traditionally delivers his Independence Day address. But the Red Fort, surrounded as it is by the predominantly Muslim population of Old Delhi, was considered a security nightmare. So now we're into Plan Three: President George Bush speaks from Purana Qila, the Old Fort.
Ironic, isn't it, that the only safe public space for a man who has recently been so enthusiastic about India's modernity should be a crumbling medieval fort?

The Commander in Chief Has Lost the Troops
(3 comments)
A unique poll of active-duty troops in Iraq shows a huge disconnect between the commander in chief and the troops in battle. It is evident that the president views the war very differently than the troops on the ground. The loss of the troops may be the final straw in the illegal occupation turned failed war. The foreign policy establishment had already told the president they thought the Iraq war was a mistake. The people have been saying the war was a mistake. All that is left are President Bush and the hawkish leaders of the two parties – only they are calling for staying the course or sending more troops.

The Texas Gerrymander
(3 comments)
The redrawing of election districts in Texas in 2003, which Tom DeLay helped engineer to make the state's Congressional delegation more Republican, lands in the Supreme Court today. Democrats are asking the court to rule that the plan is unconstitutional and violates the Voting Rights Act. The court should strike down the plan. It should also use the case to set limits on this kind of politically motivated drawing of districts by both parties, a practice that is making voters increasingly irrelevant.

Trent Lott to Bush: "I'll Override Your Override" of Port Deal
(3 comments)
President Bush's sagging poll numbers, the administration's handling of the Dubai port deal and lingering bad memories of Harriet Miers' failed Supreme Court nomination have left a broad spectrum of Republicans on Capitol Hill with little good will toward the White House.
"I was offended," Sen. Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican, said of Mr. Bush's threat last week to veto legislation aimed at stopping the transfer of port operations to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates. He said Mr. Bush "threatened me before I even knew the details of what was involved or whether I was going to vote for the bill or not."

US seeks $100 million in funds to build prisons in Iraq
(3 comments)
State Department Iraq coordinator James Jeffrey told reporters he was asking Congress for $100 million for prisons but no other big building projects were in the pipeline for the department's 2006 supplemental and 2007 budget requests for Iraq, which total just over $4 billion. [No schools, no hospitals, no other infrastructure -- just prisons -- and they've wasted all other monies earmarked for Iraq rebuilding. Do they think they can avert civil war by imprisoning everyone???]

But nowhere is the corruption more glaring than in the Medicare Part D disaster passed in the dark of night in November of 2003 after a 3-hour vote—the longest recorded vote in the history of the United States. The bill created a Medicare drug benefit that relied on private companies, and Republicans claimed privatization would give beneficiaries more choices and that competition among private plans would keep program costs down.
