the Against Corporations Organizing to Rip-off the Nation Act of 2009. It's called the ACORN Act. What that would do would be to “prohibit”—and this is a quote—“prohibit the federal government from awarding contracts, grants or other agreements to providing any other federal funds to or engaging in activities that promote certain corporations or companies guilty of certain felony convictions.”

Real democracy requires that all stakeholders be empowered. The USA system of allowing the military and CIA unlimited power is as bad as an imperial presidency. A rebalancing between citizen stakeholders is essential NOW

Despite obvious problems, self-help housing has addressed numerous important and cross-cutting social issues. These communities substantially increase the housing stock available to low-income urban residents. As sociologists Alan Gilbert and Peter Ward have observed, without self-help construction, the government either would have to expend many more resources on housing projects or raise wages to enable the poor to compete

Limits on interest rates or Usury--NEEDED or NOT?
As unlimited interest rates grew well past 30% due to arbitrary bank and finance, the system soon ran amok and producers in societies in the USA and around the globe were encouraged to finance, rather than pay fair wages and invest in local infrastructure and development. People's whos wages remained stable for decades had to turn to borrowing at usery rates to get by.
Should there be limits on interest rates?

Filibuster rules in Senate need to be returned to 1930s practices
(8 comments)
Until you move to a Senate that is more majoritarian, you know, the reality is that you're going to be in a situation where you have a very unequal, unfair, often unethical and oppressive economy, because you can't get the changes that you need, you can't get the New Deal reenacted with the kind of filibuster that is in place today. FDR couldn't have had the New Deal if he had had the filibuster that we have now

It is time that Obama investigates and prepares to prosecute those promoting torture
(15 comments)
It is necessary that a special prosecuter to investigate the crimes of the past 7 years in order to really put the end to torture and illegal things like rendition. Until this prosecution is taken place, AMERICA cannot move forward.
We do not want justice in America and elsewhere to depend any more on who is in the White House.

Should non-profit cooperative groups and workers be supported more in 2009?
In the wake of other depressions in the last two centuries, workers have organized cooperatives and have even taken over firms. Currently little has been done in this depression to empower labor in terms of taking over badly run firms--in the banking sector, auto sector, finance sector, newspaper sector, etc.
What do Americans need to do in January 2009 to empower workers to control more of their lives?

December 2008 marks not just the conclusion of another calendar year, but the end of eight years of the George W. Bush administration-an era notable for, among other things, particular predations on civil liberties, the free flow of information and the public's right to know. Other administrations have been wary of the press corps, to be sure.

This poll is intended to measure with some salience the degree that Israel appears to make decisions on its own, i.e. without reference to what current and future U.S. administrations feel. The poll measures what OP-ED readers and writers feel needs to be recognized when dealing with Israeli leadership and the level of violence within Israel's still official (and unofficial) borders.

Still time and need to impeach President Bush and Cheney
(27 comments)
Congress needs to do its duty and impeach both President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney before they leave office for crimes against humanity and malfeasance in the office entrusted to them.
It has been indicated that unless this is done now, generations will suffer for the current congress' timidity and poor judgment.
