Lorna Salzman

Environmental activist/writer/organizer since the mid 1960s; later hired by Dave Brower as regional representative (NY metro area) of Friends of the Earth, where I worked over ten years on nuclear power, energy and coastal issues, as well as helping save the Long Island pine barrens and nearby habitats. Later I had short stints at National Audubon's American Birds magazine and as director of Food & Water Inc. opposing food irradiation. In the 1990s I was a natural resources specialist in the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection. During this period I founded the NY Green Party and later ran for congress on the Suffolk County Green Part ticket, and sought the US Green Party presidential nomination in 2004. My hobbies are birding and hunting mushrooms, music, natural history, and being a grandmother to Juliette, 7. My husband Eric is a composer, critic and author of several books on contemporary music and presently writes music theatre works; his works have been widely performed in Europe and Canada. His text on 20th century music is one of the leading books on the subject in universities. This fall his new book, The New Music Theatre, will be published. We have travelled to all parts of the globe to see birds (Latin America, Australia, Nepal, Malaysia, South America, Mexico) and have lived for extended periods in Rome, Italy and Paris, France. Our poet daughter Eva lives in London. Our songwriter daughter Stephanie lives in NYC. Our son in law Jean Louis Carbonnier is French and represents Comte cheese, Cognac and some French wines in this country. He formerly headed the Champagne Wines Information Bureau, and comes from the Reims area of France.
