I have pretty much given up on joining organizations, for reasons having more to do with my personality than any theory or principle. I like to express ideas through forums like this, and email discussion lists, since the time available for thinking before writing, and the fact of a permanent record, make for more intelligent discussion -- at least by people who don't use disposable pseudonyms.
