He first became active in politics in the 2008 presidential campaign through Mike Gravel's quixotic run for the Democratic nomination, but is still actively promoting the centerpiece of Gravel's campaign: the National Initiative for Democracy, which would allow citizens to make laws at all levels of government. Saturday, January 15, 2011 Keepin busy with the Philly Greens - a march, a dinner, a meeting, and a concert
The quickly growing Green Party of Philadelphia has a community dinner, citywide meeting, and fundraising concert with folk singer Tom Neilson/the bard insurgent all coming up in the next few weeks. We're also supporting a march to end foreclosures in Philadelphia on Monday.
Monday, December 6, 2010 Worth repeating...civil disobedience STILL works
Reverend Billy Talen and his Church of Life After Shopping, along with other activists, prove that persistence, spirit, and civil disobedience still make a difference, as they forced PNC to stop funding mountaintop removal.
Wednesday, September 22, 2010 Take action for 3 important Green candidates (this is how you build a progressive alternative!)
Dan Hamburg, LeAlan Jones, and Jill Stein are running three races that are very important to the Green Party this year. In California, Hamburg is a former Democratic Congressman hoping to be elected as a Green to Mendocino County Supervisor. In Illinois, Jones is the only African American in the Senate race and has polled as high as 14%, in a state where the Green candidate for governor got over 10% in 2006. In Massachusetts, Stein is less than $1,000 away from qualifying for the rest of the debates, and about $38,000 away from qualifying for matching funds.
Monday, May 3, 2010 BREAKING: Senator Mike Gravel admits to eating brownies 'laced' with marijuana!
Although the political ramifications remain to be seen from this shocking revelation, in an interview with Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, former Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK) admitted to both smoking marijuana and eating brownies "laced" with it. "Those were pretty good," said Senator Gravel.
Sunday, March 21, 2010 1000s march on capitol against healthcare, on White House for peace. Guess which is covered more...
Everyone seems to know that the tea party "movement" had a rally on the steps of the capitol yesterday. They got in the face of a few Congressmen and now every Beltway media outlet from the Washington Post to Meet the Press is talking about it. But there was another protest in town yesterday. Thousands of people showed up in front of the White House to tell Obama (and Congress) to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, to treat Palestinians fairly, and to generally end the US military empire.
Thursday, March 18, 2010 Saturday is the day to take action against the wars
If you want to help end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, challenge the military industrial complex, fight for jobs not wars, or anything along those lines, SATURDAY IS YOUR DAY OF ACTION! There will be a massive peace march in DC - some say they are expecting hundreds of thousands to show up - and events all over the nation. On Sunday there will also be an event in Seattle, for those of you near there.
Tuesday, March 16, 2010 So, got any plans for this weekend?
This is going to be an action packed weekend in DC and around the nation. On Friday, there will be protests of Yoo. On Saturday, there will be a massive antiwar demonstration (there will also be demonstrations in Philly, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and South Dakota, among other places). On Sunday, there will be a large march for immigration reform. And there will be other related events around the country, along with the small protests and events that happen all the time.
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 Does your representative show the military industrial complex enough love? (I'm naming names)
Today in America there is a big and under-reported issue. There are actually people out there, some of them unbelievably in Congress, crazy enough to challenge that great American institution, the military industrial complex. Who doesn't love Halliburton? Or Dick Cheney? Or the Iraq War? Or useless projects that do nothing more than enrich and empower an already powerful and rich elite?
Thursday, February 18, 2010 Feeling bored? Helpless? Excited? Energetic, perhaps? Then you should help Marcy Winograd!
So I was sitting around my house today, putting off doing my Latin homework, when it hit me - instead of just opening the fridge a dozen times and checking my facebook a hundred times, I could be putting this time to good use! And I did. I started doing some online phonebanking for Marcy Winograd's campaign for Congress in California's 36th district.
Saturday, January 9, 2010 Some good ways to start 'The Year of Resistance'
I have recently been calling for a large social movement (or, more realistically, an expansion of the social movements for justice already in existence) and here are a few ways we can all get started on being part of this movement.
Sunday, November 29, 2009 Nationwide protests being held this week against Afghanistan escalation (4 comments)
It's about time for a substantial anti-war movement to start in this country - and with Obama probably announcing an escalation of 34,000 troops to Afghanistan (in addition to the 20,000 he already sent), there is no better time than now. A leading anti-war organization, World Can't Wait, is holding protests around the nation this week in response to Obama's plans.
Thursday, November 26, 2009 Please join me in observing Buy Nothing Day today
Is there a tradition any more backward or disgusting practiced across America today than that of Black Friday? Hordes of consumers mob stores for great deals on useless "goods" like new TVs or Playstations or clothes manufactured by Southeast Asian or Central American children in sweatshops.
Sunday, November 22, 2009 Phila. Inquirer still printing war criminal John Yoo's opinions
The Philadelphia Inquirer is printing Yoo's op-ed pieces now. They are giving credibility to him and destroying their own credibility. And, surprise, today John Yoo is saying that there's no real reason to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a federal court in New York City.
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Action Alert: Money bomb today to fund a documentary about direct democracy, plus other activism
There's been a lot of talk about "direct democracy" since Obama was elected - about how his campaign involved people at a level never before seen in national politics, how his White House has been using online programs to get peoples' input, and so on. But what if we as Americans could participate on a level even beyond this - what if we had the power of lawmaking?
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 Remember Mischief Night? It's back, and it could get us statewide single payer in PA
In case you're unaware, there is currently a bill in the Pennsylvania state legislature to establish a statewide single-payer (that's something close to Medicare for all) system. Governor Rendell has pledged to sign it if it gets to his desk, and there are currently 35 co-sponsors in the House - including 4 Republicans - and 9 co-sponsors in the Senate. That's out of a Senate of 50 and a House of 203.
Monday, September 21, 2009 In a huge environmental and human rights victory, World Bank to stop giving palm oil loans
The destruction of rainforests for palm oil plantations in the world's tropical regions is one of the biggest environmental problems in the world. This is a huge step forward, and one of the only bits of encouraging news ever received, for those who know of the destruction of palm oil and work against it.
Saturday, September 12, 2009 Protesting Dirty Military Recruiting Tactics and An OpedNews Photographer Unfairly Arrested (3 comments)
Most of you probably don't know this, but the US military (using well over 15 million of your hard-earned dollars) has recently opened up a center for teenagers to have "the army experience" by playing video games and going through "simulations" of Humvees and "operation centers." It's called The Army Experience Center (AEC), and it's a 14,500 square foot recruiting tool located in the Franklin Mills Mall in northeast Philadelphia. It's something that the military industrial complex - excuse me, I mean the army - wants to replicate across the country.
Thursday, June 25, 2009 My interview with Cindy Sheehan (1 comments)
A few days ago I interviewed Cindy Sheehan, half as an blogger and half as an interested citizen activist. She talked about her political future, taking action locally, prosecuting Bush, Afghanistan, and more.
Friday, June 5, 2009 Action Alert in Pennsylvania: They'll take my state parks from my cold, dead hands!
The Pennsylvania Senate's proposed budget, SB 850, would cut the Department of Conservation and Natural Resource's budget so much that they might have to close about 35 state parks. With 117 state parks in PA, that's a huge chunk, and chances are there would be a state park near you closing if you live in Pennsylvania.
Thursday, May 28, 2009 Terry McAuliffe a fraud? No...
I apologize for the short and rushed diary, but I just wanted to get this story up as it's breaking. It might turn into some kind of bigger scandal for McAuliffe because people were convicted, in part, because of the things he apparently ordered them to do.
Thursday, February 19, 2009 Californians: Please say NO to the top-two primary (1 comments)
The state of California's government rested on one man's shoulders - and he decided to be a selfish prick. Now we, as voters and citizens - must stand up against his destructive effort to put a stranglehold on California's democracy.
Friday, February 13, 2009 Let's get Mike Gravel on MSNBC (2 comments)
Maybe I'm living in fantasyland, but I think it would be great to give Mike Gravel the 10 PM slot that's open on MSNBC. He wasn't a great presidential candidate, but you've got to admit that the man was refreshingly honest and entertaining.
Saturday, February 7, 2009 Good news for the Green Party, good news for progressives (2 comments)
I think that progressives should have more than one option for political progress. Why be the Democrats' option when they are our priority? Why let the goal of "more Democrats" lead to more Blue Dogs and less actual progressives in power?
Sunday, January 4, 2009 Are your Skittles destroying the rainforest? Part 1 (1 comments)
Today, I've decided to start a series on palm oil and palm ingredients - and alternatives to them. I'm in the process of building a website on the same subject ( http://www.nomorepalm.com ), but that will take a bit of time, and time is not something worth wasting in this context.
Monday, December 1, 2008 Help kick out Congressional corruption and put in a progressive, no matter where you live (2 comments)
Malik Rahim's message of environmental peace and justice is resonating powerfully with New Orleans voters. In the past week, volunteer calls have identified dozens of new volunteers and hundreds of new supporters. With only days left until December 6th, we have a choice. We can either sit back and let a bribe-taking politician stagger to reelection, or we can pick up our phones and help send the first Green to Congress. You can volunteer to call potential voters from anywhere in the country. Please read on.
Saturday, October 25, 2008 An Activists' Guide to Election Day, part 1 (2 comments)
This post is the first in a series of posts that from now until election day. They are a basic guide on how to utilize the great opportunity that is Election Day (or early voting, depending on where you're from). The posts will mostly pertain to third party activists, although you can take what you want from them.
